‘Joker’ Star Joaquin Phoenix To Play First Gay Role In “Audacious” Period Romance

American actor and ‘Joker’ star Joaquin Phoenix is partnering with Todd Haynes for a gay period romance!

The news was revealed by Haynes himself at the Cannes Film Festival where his queer drama ‘May December’ premiered. He said that Phoenix brought the idea of the new film himself.

“There’s another movie I want to do in early 2024,” Haynes said. “It’s a project that Joaquin Phoenix brought to me, and it’s set in the 1930s: a love story between two men, based on an original, very audacious scenario.”

He added that this is going to be Phoenix’s first gay role and that he is “very excited about this project.”

While this may be indeed Phoenix’s first queer role, he was not really against it. In fact, he was actually eyed to be cast in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ but conflicting schedules did not permit it. Phoenix filmed ‘Walk the Line’ at that time. When asked about his joining ‘Brokeback Mountain’, he said that he “would have done that movie in a second.” He even added, “I feel so honored that people would think that I was worthy enough to be in it, but it was never offered to me.”

Interestingly, Phoenix’s fiancée, Rooney Mara, has also played a queer role opposite Cate Blanchett in ‘Carol’, a lesbian period film set in the 1950s and also directed by Haynes.

Hayne’s revelation about Phoenix’s upcoming gay role is pretty much what we only have right now. There are no other details as to what the plot will be about or who will play Phoenix’s lover.
