Welsh actor Luke Evans is openly gay, but have you ever wondered why his latest movie ‘Our Son’ is his first ever gay role in a film?
The short answer is, in his words, he “just haven’t found the right story” — until the script for ‘Our Son came to him.
In ‘Our Son’, Evans plays the role of Nicky, a father who had to go through a divorce with his partner, Gabriel (played by Billy Porter) which puts the care and custody for their 8-year-old son in question. “Stress and anxiety flare as their relationship gets to an unrepairable place,” the Tribeca Film Festival synopsis of the film says. “Now the two must navigate the unenviable position of revealing the news to shared friends and family. Thus begins the journey to find themselves and support their son.”
In an interview with PEOPLE, Luke revealed that he has always been ready to take on gay roles, except that he had to search for the “right story.”
