A Filipino drag queen’s performance has opened up the discourse over drag’s validity as an art expression and its alleged “misogyny.”
On September 15, Sunday, ‘Drag Race Philippines’ season 1 alumnus Brigiding performed a Chappell Roan song called “Red Wine Supernova.”
The performance showed the viewers and drag queen having fun lipsyncing to the song as red wine poured from her crotch which she shares with the audience.
However, fans and supporters of the drag singer and songwriter were less enthused about the show, claiming Brigiding was mocking Roan as well as the female experience of menstruating.
This opened up the debate about whether or not drag is “misogynistic” and “intends to mock women” instead of celebrating them. This debate came at the heels of Roan’s fans criticizing another drag queen, Plane Jane, for her “distasteful impersonation” of the singer at the VMAs.
“This just shows that at the end of the day, gay men are still men and disrespect us women just as much as the average cishet male. This is disgusting,” wrote one X user.
Another said, “Why do we have to accept mockery of women and their bodies passed off as art?”
“It rubs me the wrong way that men, in any social group that they exist in or identify with, will still find a way to mock and harm women,” someone added.
