Disney faces backlash after reportedly shelving an episode of the animated TV series ‘Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur’ that focused on a transgender character.
‘Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur’ follows 13-year-old Lunella Lafayette and her T. rex sidekick, Devil Dinosaur, as they protect New York City from danger. The final season is slated for release next year on both Disney Channel and Disney Plus, but an episode titled “Gatekeeper” was allegedly withheld due to its subject matter.
“Gatekeeper” centers on Brooklyn, the transgender captain of Lafayette’s school volleyball team. A transphobic parent and a “narrow-minded” rival coach named Greet attempt to ban Brooklyn from the team after learning she had played on a boys’ soccer team. The characters are then trapped in a supernatural, escape room-like dimension that resembles a locker room.
X (formerly Twitter) account @LostMediaBuster leaked the shelved episode where Brooklyn’s coach pushes back against the transphobic Coach Greer and says, “Brooklyn IS a girl, and she’s gonna play,” echoing the recent push in the US to bar trans women from competing in sports.
