Episode 22
When Su Yu discovers that Aunt Zhou’s shoes are already worn out while they are packing, he is reminded of when she gave him his new shoes. Meanwhile, the stepbrothers receive their first paycheck from the store. Su Yu catches Aunt Zhou staring at nothingness, despite the fact that she appears not to be sad about her mother’s death. He approaches her and gives her a new pair of shoes that he purchased with his money, addressing her as “Mom.” Wu Bi joins them and gives her a matching dress to go with the shoes and also calls her mom. Duo Duo tells her that even though she has lost her mother, she still has them as family.
Wu Bi passed a physical assessment for Aviation admission. The family celebrates although Wu Bi claims that he still has academic performance to pass and does not inform his father. He takes Su Yu for a ride when he receives his driving license. The two ended up on the beach and camped overnight. When Su Yu wakes up, he sees a still-sleeping Wu Bi alongside him and plants a kiss on his cheek. He wakes him up to watch the sunrise, during which they take a photograph that Wu Bi intends to use as his computer wallpaper. Su Yu says he wants to shout, then looks at Wu Bi before shouting, ”I love you, sea”. Wu Bi looks at him and remarks that this is the first time he has seen him smile happily.
Su Yu wins a full scholarship after placing first in an Olympiad. When his biological mother learns of the news, she invites them to celebrate, where Mo Yi and his father unexpectedly join them. To his nephew’s chagrin, Wu Bi’s father expresses his excitement and hopes that Su Yu will join their company soon. The father and son leave, complaining that an outsider should not be allowed to work for the company. Wu Bi’s father inquires about his plans and advises him to study overseas instead, but he declines.Su Yu requests to talk to Wu Bi’s father privately.
Episode 23
Su Yu informs Wu Bi’s father of his son’s application to the aviation school who gets surprised but concerned about his son’s academic ability. Su Yu assures him that Wu Bi is capable. Meanwhile, Wu Bi complains that he will most likely fail the exam as well, but Su Yu reminds him of his dream and tells him that entering civil aviation may force them apart, something he does not want.
Wu Bi starts studying harder at school and receives tutoring from Su Yu who promises him a reward if he continues to improve. Meanwhile, he gets a visit from Mo Yi, who becomes irritated when the former ignores him in order to study. He informs Wu Bi that he will accompany him to study abroad, but the latter declines because he believes he will pass the exam and insists he will stay with Su Yu no matter what. He also promises to see Duo Duo grow up. Mo Yi asks Wu Bi if he can’t live without Su Yu because he doesn’t want to accept that his cousin will now blindly follow a stranger and becomes enraged when the latter responds that he’ll even give Su Yu his father’s company if he asks.
For some reason, Su Yu shares that he feels like the days that he and Wu Bi ride the bike together are numbered. Wu Bi gets into the university, while the girl who used to like Su Yu writes her another letter, this time for him and Wu Bi, who laughs when he reads it. Meanwhile, Wu Bi’s father informs Mo Yi that he no longer needs to bring his son abroad because he passed the exam and praises Su Yu’s influence, which annoys his nephew.
While Wu Bi is at the riding club with Su Yu and Duo Duo, he receives a call from Mo Yi, who is looking for a contract he asked him to keep. He tells him to go to Su Yu’s room since he asked him to save it for him. Mo Yi finds the picture of Su Yu with Wan Ying and recalls Wu Bi’s previous inquiries about her. He realizes Wu Bi kept the two’s relationship from him for Su Yu.
Episode 24
Aunt Zhou informs the two that the landlord has granted them free use of the second floor and has suggested that they stay at Wu Bi’s while the renovations are being made. Wu Bi immediately contacts Mo Yi and questions his plans. Su Yu overhears the conversation and tells him that he already knows about his involvement with the store. Wu Bi is furious at Su Yu for only now informing him about his communication with Mo Yi. The two slept at Wu Bi’s apartment, where he kissed a sleeping Su Yu on the forehead before leaving for a run. Su Yu follows him and watches him fondly. Duo Duo shares with Su Yu that tapping her watch would light up Wu Bi’s watch as well, making it simpler for him to find them if she’s looking for him.
Su Yu runs into Mo Yi at Wu Bi’s, who offers to make up an appointment for Lao Si with a well-known doctor. Mo Yi then suddenly offers to cut Su Yu’s hair after the latter notices him staring intently. While Mo Yi cuts his hair, he starts to throw provocative words at Su Yu. When he asks if the latter is afraid of him, Su Yu answers no because he is Wu Bi’s brother. Wu Bi finds them with Mo Yi’s scissors near Su Yu’s face and pushes his cousin away. Mo Yi orders Wu Bi to pick him up the next day. Wu Bi holds Su Yu’s hand and tells him to avoid Mo Yi as much as possible, as unlike him, who is tough but softhearted, his cousin is ruthless.
Wu Bi drives Su Yu’s car after learning that the appointment is scheduled by Mo Yi, who phones him and inquires about his location. Mo Yi is taken aback when Wu Bi informs him that he is in Su Yu’s car. While driving, he notices that the brakes are failing but does not tell Su Yu immediately so that he won’t worry, and tells him to rest. Meanwhile, he thinks hard about how he can drive without the brakes. He gets past other cars by passing them, but crashes into a truck that has stopped before a red light.
Su Yu awakens from the collision to find a bloodied and unconscious Wu Bi shielding him with his body. He tries to wake him up and breaks open the door to pull Wu Bi’s unconscious body outside. The truck driver who called the ambulance tells Su Yu to place Wu Bi on the floor, but he refuses and continues to cradle the injured Wu Bi as he sobs.
Meanwhile, Wu Bi’s matching watch with Duo Duo illuminates, indicating that she is looking for him. He tells Wu Bi to get up because the little girl is waiting for them and they must stay together. Wu Bi opens his eyes and blindly stares at Su Yu before closing them again. The driver informs Su Yu that the ambulance is stuck in traffic on the opposite side of the road. Su Yu carries the unconscious Wu Bi on his back and runs toward the ambulance.
Su Yu realizes, as the emergency unit takes in Wu Bi, that no matter how invincible Wu Bi has been, he can still get hurt and admits his fear of Wu Bi’s death. He promises to give everything if Wu Bi survives. As he waits outside the emergency room, he recalls all of his happy and painful memories of Wu Bi. The doctor comes out and speaks to him..
The episode concludes with a montage of the family’s home, with all rooms except Wu Bi’s devoid of personal belongings, until it ends on the tree where they buried their New Year’s wishes box, which they promised to open in ten years.
Writer’s Thoughts
Although it has been confirmed that the series will have an open ending with the promise of Season 2, the conclusion still leaves us speechless and emotional. While the finale episodes began light and heartwarming with the sudden display of stolen kisses (probably the first after the ban! ), they also gave us a big heartbreak that may only heal once we see the two happy and together again in the much-anticipated sequel. Without a doubt, the series delivered on and exceeded the hype. From the beautiful OSTs sung by the cast themselves to the nostalgic vibe that their home provides, the comic relief brought by the nature of the boys being teenagers, the magnificent display of different types of parental love, and of course the chemistry between Jongmin and Xu Bin that we will miss for quite some time, we can definitely say that Chai Ji Dan’s ‘Stay With Me‘ will mark one of the best series released this year.
