5 Most Well-known LGBT Superheroes from Marvel and DC

Jon Kent

Over the years, superhero media have amassed quite a gallery of heroes who are part of the LGBT.

Marvel and DC Comics are without a doubt the most well-known publishers of superhero comics and both have brought countless LGBT superheroes to the page over the years. Here is a list of a few of the most well-known ones as well as some extra details like their powers, abilities, and relationship statuses.

1. Jon Kent

Jon Kent is the son of the original Superman, Clark Kent, who originally went by Superboy, but has since taken up the Superman title, following in his father’s footsteps. Jon, who has inherited all of his father’s Kryptonian powers from flight to heat vision, identifies as bisexual and has been in a relationship with Jay Nakamura, an activist Jon meets while saving children who has his own set of superpowers. Unlike the original Superman’s lover, Lois Lane, who took years to discover Clark Kent’s true identity, Jay discovered who this Superman was within the same issue they met. Together, this couple has been fighting for a better world and Jay has been a much-needed support system for Jon. After all, if Superman is supposed to help everyone, there has to be someone helping him, too.

Tim Drake

2. Tim Drake

Tim Drake is one of the many characters who have trained in martial arts as well as investigation to take the title of Robin, best known as Batman’s partner in the fight against crime. Later known as the Red Robin, Tim Drake is canonically bisexual and is in a relationship with Bernard Dowd, a former classmate of his who he later reconnected with, leading to their dating. In Batman Urban Legends #10, Tim talked about how he always kind of knew that he had an interest in boys, but thanks to his busy life of fighting crimes, he never had the time to process it until much later. In the same issue, Batman told his former sidekick that he was happy for him upon learning about his relationship with Bernard, which is a rare show of emotion from the dark knight himself.

3 and 4. Teddy Altman and Billy Kaplan

Switching over to the Marvel universe is a superpowered pairing that is quite possibly the most prominent same-sex relationship at Marvel. The couple started off as teammates as part of the Young Avengers. Teddy, also known as Hulkling, the shapeshifting son of Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, and Anelle, princess of the Skrulls, and Billy, one of Wanda Maximoff and the Vision’s two sons, who have inherited his mother’s magical powers have since made history, tying the knot in Empyre #4 and becoming Marvel’s first married gay couple. With a younger version of Billy making an appearance in the live-action series WandaVision, who knows, maybe this couple will make its way to the big screen soon!

America Chavez

5. America Chavez

America Chavez is a multiverse-traveling Latina heroine who opens star-shaped holes in reality and also holds the title of Marvel’s first lesbian superhero. Formerly romantically involved with an EMT by the name of Lisa Halloran, America is currently flying solo in the relationship department but is often seen flirting with Kate Bishop, the current Hawkeye. She also made her movie debut recently in ‘ Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ where she is seen wearing a pride pin on her jacket, though her sexuality goes unmentioned in the film.

Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy

Special Mention: Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

While Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are far from heroes, making them ineligible for the main list, it would be unfitting not to mention this fan-favorite couple when discussing LGBT characters from comics. Harley, who was previously most associated with the Joker, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship with, has since begun a much happier relationship with another member of Batman’s rogues gallery, Pamela Isley, more commonly known as Poison Ivy. The pairing is perhaps most prominently featured in the Harley Quinn animated TV series, which shows the two entering a relationship by the end of the second season and exploring their relationship further throughout the third season.

Of course, there are many more heroes in both Marvel and DC who are part of the LGBT community such as Iceman, Batwoman, and many more. This list only named a few of the most prominent ones. If you have a favorite LGBT superhero who didn’t make it onto the list, feel free to name them in the comments below!
