Growing Up with the Friend Group of ‘Remember Me’ throughout Eps.1-3

Remember Me - ความรักเขียนด้วยความรัก

The first three episodes of ‘Remember Me’ take us through the early lives of the six main characters: Gun, Em, Name, Nan, Champ, and Golf. In the first three episodes, we see them grow together and it’s as if we as the viewers are growing up right beside them.

Episode 1

We first meet the main friend group, consisting of the first five characters in their childhood, played by a charming cast of child actors. The story starts with a group of four youngsters hearing that a new kid moved into town and wants to befriend him, which is how Name, short for No Name, joins the group. He gained the nickname due to his inability to speak, which meant he could not properly introduce himself to his new friends, but it was clear from the start that they accepted him into the group all the same. Around the same time, Gun started exchanging letters with Golf, a student from another school, as part of an assignment. The two kept in touch long after said assignment, but Gun remained hesitant to meet up in person. The kids spent their days playing by the water, eating Champ’s grandfather’s pickled fish.

Episode 2

As the story progressed, we saw this group of kids grow up before our very eyes. They entered high school, and they dip their toes into the then-emerging world of online messaging, which allows for easier and more instant communication with Name as well as between Gun and Golf. Aside from that, however, it’s clear that not much has changed between them. They still spend their after-school hours together watching movies, being silly, and just enjoying each others’ company. We also see Gun and Golf’s story progress with Golf wanting to meet only for Gun to be unable to bring himself to walk up to his friend and say ‘hi’. The pair run into each other a few more times, unbeknownst to Golf, Gun feels nervous every time. This episode also treats us to heartwarming scenes where Name can finally communicate with his friends thanks to MSN, deepening his bond with Em, who teaches him to use it. It even ends with a lovely scene of Name whispering to Em that he would like to watch more movies with him, which hits even harder thanks to us knowing this character ever since his childhood and seeing his long silence now broken even if it was just by a little.

Episode 3

Later on, we then see our main cast of characters in their final year of high school, with the exception of Nan, who headed to Bangkok for college before the others. Spending the past few episodes with these characters creates a real sense of investment in their application results. When the website that’s supposed to show the results crashes, viewers can feel their frustration. The same goes for the joy and excitement of them getting into their preferred courses and the suspense of Gun realizing he will be in the same school and faculty as Golf after avoiding him for all these years. Most of all, the goodbyes at the end as the members of the group head to their separate universities while Name gets left behind in their quiet town leaves has viewers feeling like they said goodbye to friends they’ve known all their lives, and given how we’ve seen them grow up from little kids, we might as well have.

This episode closes with another scene with Name and Em where Name speaks for the first time in the whole show. The emotions brought about by the previous episode’s whisper are amplified here as Name makes Em promise that he’ll come back and visit.

These first three episodes did an excellent job of putting viewers into the group of friends we’ve been introduced to, allowing us to feel their tears as well as smiles as if we were one of them. This queer drama has so much more to offer than romance and that is more than apparent in how much care these first few episodes take to establish the main characters as a group of friends who genuinely care for and love each other.
