6 Taylor Swift Songs for the 6 Leads of ‘Only Friends’

Are you a fan of Taylor Swift and ‘Only Friends’? If so, this article’s for you! Here’s a list of Taylor Swift songs that match each of the series’ main characters as of episode 5!

Top – Girl At Home (Taylor’s Version)

Top made his intentions with Mew very clear – that he was looking for a committed relationship with him. The two of them seemed to be on a good path to get there until Boston entered the picture and tried to get Top to himself, culminating in a wild night in Boston’s car. As Taylor would say, Top shouldn’t be looking at Boston since he has a “girl (well, in this case, a boy) at home, and everybody knows that.” We’ll have to wait until succeeding episodes, though, to see where these events take their relationship.

Mew – All Of The Girls You Loved Before

Jojo Tichakorn, one of the series’ directors, confirmed on Twitter (now X) that Mew is the Swiftie of the group, making this song choice extra special. While Jojo says Mew has been listening to ‘King of My Heart’ from the ‘Reputation’ album on repeat, Mew is in his ‘Lover’ era at the moment, so a song from that era would be just as fitting. ‘All Of The Girls You Loved Before’ matches Mew’s current situation since he knows about Top’s past relationships and flings, but is still choosing him. He doesn’t mind that he wasn’t Top’s first love since all of the boys Top was with before made him the one Mew has fallen for.

Nick – august

Taylor Swift’s ‘august’ is the theme song for everyone who is simply a second choice and unfortunately for Nick, that’s him. Like Augustine, the character the song was written about, Nick finds himself desperately in love with someone who was never his to begin with. You can almost hear the lyrics “you weren’t mine to lose” echoing in Nick’s mind as he saw Boston and Top together and it will certainly be interesting to see where this takes him.

Boston – You’re Not Sorry (Taylor’s Version)

Boston may as well be a professional agitator with how many issues he tries to start just to get what he wants. The list of characters in this series he has manipulated, or at least tried to, goes on and on from convincing Top that Mew was cheating on him to planting seeds of doubt in Sand’s mind about his budding relationship with Ray. In spite of all this, he seems to show no remorse, or as Taylor would put it, he’s “not sorry, no, no, oh-oh.”

Ray – Begin Again (Taylor’s Version)

After having his heart broken by Mew not reciprocating the way he felt, Ray ended episode 4 with a potential romance budding between him and Sand. ‘Begin Again,’ a song about finding new love after a heartbreak, is now perfect for his character. The song’s gentleness is a perfect match for episode 4’s closing scene of Sand and Ray listening to music together and slowly taking their bond somewhere further as we, as the audience, “watch it begin again.”

Sand – Glitch

“We were supposed to be just friends.” The opening line of Taylor Swift’s ‘Glitch’ perfectly sums up how Sand expected things with Ray to go. One day, they decide to start a friendship. A few days later, they’re waking up next to each other. Sand’s initial hesitance to take their friendship into sexual (and later, romantic) territory before he eventually gave in would surely have him thinking there’s been some sort of glitch causing this change.
