‘Oh! My Assistant’ is a 2022 Korean comedy BL series adapted from a webtoon comic of the same name.
It stars Seon Ho (Song Seunghyun), an adult comic artist, and his newly hired assistant, Goo Muyeong (Ko Changbin). Romance ensues between them as they start to work together.
The show may have already ended, but its cute and comically sensual vibe makes ‘Oh! My Assistant’ an easy pick for a rewatch. So here’s a recap of what went down with Seon Ho and Muyeong in this eight-episode-long romantic comedy gem!
Episode 1 – Not Impotent At All!
The first episode is mainly dedicated to the introduction of the characters and considering the length of the episode, it’s not surprising that they are presented in succession. Fret not, though, because the show has woven it well into the setting so it is not an overwhelming name dump.
The episode begins with the protagonist, Seon Ho, an adult webtoon artist who has not felt sexual arousal in two years. Thinking that he’s possibly gone impotent, he blames his predicament on the nature of his work. Recently, he’s been having difficulty finishing his project, so he begins looking for an assistant. He, together with his manager, the beautiful but loud and unabashed Lee Min-young, narrows down their picks to three. The first two choices don’t seem to fit well with Seon Ho’s preferences until they check the third one, Goo Muyeong. Both Seon Ho and Min-young take a quick liking to him because 1) he’s good-looking, and 2) his art is really beautiful.
Expectedly, Muyeong gets the job albeit without some unfortunate events during the interview process. This includes Seon Ho accidentally spilling a whole mug of hot coffee all over Muyeong, and an unintentional exposure of Muyeong’s chest which — to Seon Ho’s surprise — triggers arousal. Unbeknown to Seon Ho, Muyeong actually applied for the job because he’s been a fan of (and crushing on) Seon Ho since he was young.
Given the premise of the story, the pilot episode already presents plenty of sexual overtones, and they do not shy away from it. The innuendos are funny, ranging from conservative to suggestive, although some may find it a bit too comically awkward, but it’s not bad. It’s actually a good start — interesting and funny enough to keep you going for the next.
Episode 2 – Teeny-Weeny Green-Eyed Monster
The next episode carries on with Seon Ho and Muyeong now actually working together in Seon Ho’s studio. It’s not as detail-heavy as the pilot episode, but it showcases exciting development.
It’s apparent that while Muyeong keeps a chill, almost cold, appearance, he really enjoys being around Seon Ho. It’s not surprising considering the crush he’s been harboring on his favorite artist for years. But when Seon Ho’s manager, Minyoung, comes barging into the apartment, a confused Muyeong overthinks and wonders if Seon Ho and Minyoung are dating. A tiny bit of envy and jealousy boils in him.
On that same day, Muyeong sees Seon Ho napping and sleep talk, mumbling a name Muyeong thinks is his. Of course, the infatuated assistant finds it adorable, even thinking that his favorite artist dreams about him. But then, in an attempt to control his delusion, he convinces himself that it must be impossible, especially when they just practically met. It doesn’t help that the names “Muyeong” and “Minyoung” sound alike. While the whole sleep-talking Seon Ho moment made him feel a little fuzzy in the chest, Muyeong goes on an overthinking overdrive as he remains unsure if it really is his or the manager’s name. He brings the image and bothering thoughts home and he bothers his friend, Do Ha, about it.
