The final two episodes of ‘The New Employee’ are out!
Last time, we listed what we think are the cutest moments in the first five episodes of this light and adorable office romance web drama show. This time, however, as we are now just down to the finale, we’re recapping what happened between our virgin intern Seunghyun and his cold on the outside but actually sweet and loving on the inside boss-turned-boyfriend, Jongchan.
SPOILER ALERT! This is a recap, so we’ll have an almost detailed rundown of each episode. Proceed with caution if you haven’t seen the show yet!
Episode 6 – It Isn’t a Bed of Roses
The sixth episode is sweet — like a little too sweet — and then it gets an adulting twist.
Things have been doing pretty well for both Seunghyun and Jongchan. They go out on dates and slowly get a little more intimate. Jongchan lets Seunghyun call him “hyung” — talk about a relationship upgrade! Indeed, outside work, it looks like it’s all rainbows and butterflies for this honeymoon phase, but back in the office, things are getting a little anxious.
The team wraps up the campaign project Seunghyun conceptualized, just as Seunghyun is nearing the end of his internship. If he wants to continue working for them, he has to apply as a full-time employee — which he does. His whole team, his ever-supporting boss slash boyfriend Jongchan included, wishes him the best of luck. With his contribution and successful campaign ad project, they are confident Seunghyun will pass the interview.
Unfortunately, things go the opposite of all their expectations. To their surprise, Seunghyun fails the second part of the interview, which means that he can’t be promoted from intern to employee.
Episode 7 – A Surprisingly Satisfying Finale
With all the missed call notifications from Jongchan, it’s apparent that Seunghyun has not taken the rejection well. Of course, it worries Jongchan, but he does everything he can in his position to possibly reverse the interview decision. Apparently, one of the directors who do not like Jongchan gave Seunghyun a failing mark which pulled down the rest of Seunghyun’s score. Moreover, even if they find ways to correct the scores, the result can no longer be reversed as it may reflect badly on the company for lack of integrity. Still hoping for a reversal, Jongchan requests the CEO for her intervention multiple times only to be rejected also repeatedly.
Meanwhile, Seunghyun meets Kanghee, the female intern who also is ending her stay at the company, and they work on an internship vlog Kanghee has been working on since her first day. She also hands Seunghyun a flash drive of extra footage, telling Seunghyun to watch them in case he feels down.
Their internship vlog surprisingly goes viral, even reaching their client whom Seunghyun successfully helped launch a good campaign. Meanwhile, as their video gains massive likes and hits, Seunghyun watches the extra footage, especially the interview with Jongchan. There, Jongchan gives Seunghyun the credit for their successful campaign project and adds that he really likes it when he sees the spark in the eyes of people who love the work they do. This reminds Seunghyun of what Jongchan told him on one of their dates: “Your eyes light up when you talk about something you like.”
Feeling guilty for ignoring Jongchan’s calls, he immediately runs for Jongchan only to find his boyfriend’s house empty. He then learns that Jongchan is at his house, and he runs back. Upon meeting, Jongchan immediately breaks the news: he may not have been able to reverse the decision, but he’s left the company and built his own. He asks Seunghyun if he wants to join him there, and Seunghyun excitedly agrees. Seunghyun also apologizes for shutting down almost everyone’s attempt to reach out to him, including his boyfriend, after the rejection, and promises to face his problems with a stronger heart. And for the first time, they exchange their I-love-you’s with one another.
To add to the good news, Jongchan has also hired Kanghee and Seunghyun’s best friend, Jiyeon, and Seunghyun is elated to start anew.
