Episode 7: Choose

When Myung Ha’s grandmother wakes up in the hospital, she reminds him to take care of himself as well and tells him that he cannot care for others if he can’t do it for himself. On Myung Ha’s phone, he receives another message from the unknown number telling him to think things through. On their way out the following day, Yeo Woon tells him that the stalker has been found and he will no longer be able to hurt Myung Ha. Meanwhile, the game reminds Myung Ha to choose, or else all of his data on the server will be deleted. That evening, Myung Ha goes to the rooftop and cries as he answers that he chose both his grandmother and Yeo Woon to save. Knowing that his senior can actually hear him from somewhere else, he answers both. As the time ticks down, he remembers all the memories he has shared with Yeo Woon from the time that they met. The game tells Myung Ha that another system error has occurred, and he runs down the stairs to hide himself. He then hears footsteps coming towards him and suddenly remembers a conversation between him and his senior, where the latter asks him if he prefers to break up immediately or delay the breakup in order to spend more time together. Myung Ha chooses to break up immediately, as he believes that prolonging it will only be more painful. He is left with fourteen days to settle things with Yeo Woon.

One day, as Yeo Woon and Myung Ha spend some time on the school rooftop, Yeo Woon excitedly tells him all the things he wants to do with him and his grandmother. As Yeo Woon leaves for training, Myung Ha can only whisper, I love you, in the air. Understanding that he has only a few days left with his newfound friends, Myung Ha gathers everyone at Yeo Woon’s place for a Korean barbeque and quality time together. They also take a photo using Kyung Hun’s digital camera as a memory of that day. Throughout the day, Myung Ha reminds Yeo Woon of the importance of keeping the house clean and other things to take care of himself. Later that night, Yeo Woon asks Myung Ha if they can live together once they graduate, but the latter remains silent. He also asks Myung Ha to promise to stay by his side, but he continues not to answer, instead, Myung Ha tells Yeo Woon that he now has true friends who will be able to stay with him. Yeo Woon tells Myung Ha that it’s okay for him if the latter doesn’t feel the same towards him, but he wishes he would rely on him as well. Yeo Woon confesses his love and holds Myung Ha’s hand, but Myung Ha can only smile at him.

The next day, Yeo Woon reaches one hundred thousand followers on Instagram, and the game rewards Myung Ha with a pen for completing the mission. Just as Sang Won arrives, Myung Ha starts to feel dizzy and collapses on the ground. On the other hand, Yeo Woon meets with the owner of Swoony, the brand that is scouting him to be their model, and the ones that Myung Ha met to help Yeo Woon gain followers on Instagram. The brand helped find the stalker to ensure that Yeo Woon is protected, as is his image; hence, the latter agrees that he will model for them and participate in the activities sponsored by them. To his surprise, the owner asks him to think about things thoroughly and says that she is also considering Myung Ha’s request to let Yeo Woon do what he wants and to watch him until he grows up. That evening, Yeo Woon was unable to reach Myung Ha until the following day. He also learns that Sang Won took care of Myung Ha when he fell ill. When he reaches home after a whole day of trying to find Myung Ha, Yeo Woon finds him at his home and questions why he could rely on Sang Won but not on him. Yeo Woon ends up expressing all of his worries and frustration at how Myung Ha seems to keep everything on his own and throws away the gift that Myung Ha got him. Myung Ha realizes that the distance he has been trying to establish has been hurting Yeo Woon and questions himself about how he can really make him happy. Yeo Woon begins to avoid Myung Ha, despite his attempts to reconcile. He waits for him to come home and tells him that he truly likes him, even if Yeo Woon doesn’t think he does, but he also tells them they need to break up. Yeo Woon refuses to accept it and begs Myung Ha to stay. He promises to do better, and he will do anything that Myung Ha asks him to, but the latter remains firm on his decision. As Yeo Woon tells him again that he loves him, the game tells Myung Ha that a system error has occurred.

With just three days remaining, Myung Ha opens the pen that he got as a reward. The game tells him that he can use the author’s pen on the person he chooses. However, any change he makes will result in a deduction from Yeo Woon’s fondness for him. The game tells him that the server has been heavily damaged. The game begins to delete Myung Ha from the memories of everyone. To Myung Ha’s shock, his surroundings start to distort, and everything starts to deteriorate in front of him. Meanwhile, Yeo Woon, whose memories are the last to be deleted, tries to find Myung Ha as the latter falls into an endless pit.

Episode 8. The Answer

Yeo Woon finds himself on the school rooftop but has no recollection of why he was there in the first place. He also starts to feel like something is missing, and some things are unexplainable to him, such as suddenly becoming friends with Sang Won and Kyung Hun. Sang Won is also unable to answer why he joined the track and field team and why he seems to be comfortable with Yeo Woon now.

One day, the owner of Swoony calls Yeo Woon to update him on the status of the stalker issue and asks how Myung Ha is doing. Although he initially wondered who Myung Ha was, Yeo Woon begins to remember everything about Myung Ha and calls around his friends to ask them if they have seen Myung Ha. However, Sang Won and the others tell him that they don’t know anyone by that name. Yeo Woon goes to Myung Ha’s home and finds his grandmother, who also has no recollection of him. He asks permission to go inside the house and goes to Myung Ha’s room. There he finds the pen, and the game also shows Myung Ha’s memories to him. To his surprise, the game tells him that the pen can change anything he wants to change in the game. In a flashback, Myung Ha wrote that he wants Yeo Woon to be happy. Back to the present, Yeo Woon writes using the author’s pen, and the game tells him that the mission has been changed.

In a flashback of Myung Ha’s life before the game, while everyone around him wishes upon the shooting star happy things, he wishes to disappear instead. After losing his grandmother and getting dumped by his girlfriend, who tells him that he doesn’t know how to love, Myung Ha decides to meet his mother but is denied by her. Myung Ha realizes that the very first time he mustered the courage to be brave was also the rejection that he got; hence, he decided to completely abandon himself as well. Walking towards the vast sea, Myung Ha submerges himself underwater until he completely sinks down deep. When Myung Ha wakes up, he finds himself with his senior in front of him and asks how he arrived there. His senior tells him that he is dead, but his regretting giving up made him want to give Myung Ha another chance. His senior thought that by letting him see himself from someone else’s perspective and learning how to love someone, Myung Ha would learn how to love himself and be a little bit happier. Myung Ha questions his senior’s intention for letting everything end, but the latter answers him with a question instead, asking him if he really would have let things end if he said it’s over. Myung Ha tells him that he wants to stay and be with Yeo Woon. The game tells Myung Ha that the mission has been changed to make Myung Ha happy. His senior tells him to be happy this time. Myung Ha asks his senior who he really is but doesn’t get an answer before he wakes up and finds himself back in his bedroom. On his phone is a message from his senior wishing him to find hope in that place. To Myung Ha’s surprise, the game tells him that the dating zone has been activated. He immediately calls Yeo Woon, who is worried about him. Yeo Woon, who went to the cinema to relive their movie date before, in an effort to calm himself, promised to wait for him. Myung Ha runs to the cinema but is unable to find Yeo Woon, who also can’t see him, even though they are in the same exact place. Myung Ha realizes that they are on a different timeline, two days apart, after seeing the date in the cinema, and asks Yeo Woon to meet him at his scheduled race as he will be there. Whispering to the phone that they missed each other, the game tells Myung Ha that he has three hours remaining to see Yeo Woon. On his way to the race, Myung Ha’s bus pulls over due to a faulty engine, prompting him to run instead. Meanwhile, Yeo Woon, on that timeline, also decides to stop waiting and find Myung Ha himself. As the two run towards each other, the game tells them that they are a few meters away from the dating zone, and the time remaining goes to zero. Yeo Woon immediately hugs Myung Ha and whispers that he got him before kissing him.

Myung Ha and Yeo Woon go to the beach alongside Kyung Hun, Sang Won, and Si-A to spend time together. As Myung Ha sees the smile on everyone’s faces, he finally realizes all the answers he had hoped for were in everyday life that’s too mundane to be fate yet too beautiful to be a chance. Myung Ha thinks that happiness must be hidden somewhere each day.

Writer’s Thoughts

It’s definitely without a doubt that ‘Love for Love’s Sake’ started the Korean BL Year with a bang. As it is already a given that a 30-minute run time per episode will give a series enough time to showcase the plot and acting really well, the show has well exceeded and gone beyond our expectations. The acting of the actors, especially Myung Ha’s, is proof that a truly good actor just needs one show to prove everything that he has, and Lee Tae Vin really did that. We also fell in love with how Cha Ju Wan portrayed the innocent Yeo Woon in search of happiness. Overall, with its fresh story line and a line of visually pleasing actors that know how to act well, ‘‘Love for Love’s Sake’ is definitely one of the shows this year that you shouldn’t miss!
