‘Oh! My Assistant’ and its Jampacked Second Half

Oh My Assistant

We come back for the second half of ‘Oh! My Assistant’. In case you missed what happened in the first four episodes, check out our first-half recap here!

Without further ado, let’s dive into it!

Oh My Assistant

Episode 5 – Surprise! Surprise!

The second half begins with Seon Ho and Muyeong going to a park to take some pictures they need for the project, albeit not without looking like they are on a date. As they walk, Seon Ho asks Muyeong about his thoughts on boys falling in love, to which Muyeong responds that he’s fine with it. They end their walk in a cafe where Seon Ho meets with his manager, Minyoung.

Although he doesn’t recognize that it’s Minyoung, Muyeong, instead of leaving, decides to stalk the two. While he thinks it’s stupid that he feels jealous, he still decides to follow them. When they visit a hotel for research, Muyeong misconstrues it as something else. Sad and disappointed, he calls his best friend Do Ha, and meets him at their favorite bar.

Apparently, Seon Ho and Minyoung are visiting the same bar which Minyoung describes as popular among gay couples. Both Seon Ho and Muyeong are surprised to see each other there. Do Ha, sensing the awkward conflict between the two, and is already aware of his best friend’s troubles, pulls Muyeong for a surprise kiss.

The episode is pretty much a continuation of the sexual identity conflict of the previous episodes, but of course, not without a problematic strike at the end. Do Ha’s kiss may be a surprising plot device to imply both his overprotectiveness but also hidden feelings for Muyeong. On the other hand, it can also be interpreted as him deciding to ‘out’ Muyeong to Seon Ho without his consent.

Oh My Assistant Ep 6

Episode 6 – Hide and Seek

It’s an episode of confessions — yes, with an s!

The feelings can’t be contained anymore, and Seon Ho finally confesses that he likes Muyeong! But not without an awkward start. At Seon Ho’s apartment, the kiss at the bar remains an elephant in the room. But when Muyeong is about to leave, Seon Ho decides to bring it up. Muyeong takes it as an opportunity to admit that he likes men. Seon Ho, on the other hand, takes it as a sign to also admit that he likes Muyeong.

Unfortunately, Muyeong, who is still convinced that Seon Ho is dating Minyoung, keeps the on-the-spot fake dating set-up with his best friend Do Ha and tells Seon Ho that he already has a boyfriend. Disappointed, Seon Ho says that it’s okay and that he just wants to tell Muyeong what he really feels.

It’s become a game of hide and seek, with Muyeong hiding his own feelings for Seon Ho (and to an extent, also Do Ha for Muyeong), and Seon Ho realizing that he actually wants Muyeong. Muyeong thinks it’s best that they stay away from each other, so he quits his job. He lowkey wishes for Seon Ho to ask him to stay, but Seon Ho just leaves him on read. Apparently, Seon Ho decides to find Muyeong in his house where he personally — and formally — thanks the latter for working for him. But what’s a heartbreak without some drinks right? The episode ends with Seon Ho already downing three soju bottles as he wonders why he feels so heartbroken when he and Muyeong haven’t even dated yet.

Oh My Assistant Ep 7

Episode 7 – Learning Things One After Another

Muyeong goes back to Seon Ho’s apartment to get back his things, only to discover that the artist is still asleep from getting drunk. Seon Ho eventually wakes up and convinces Muyeong to stay so they can talk but not after he gets to shower.

While waiting, Minyoung suddenly comes into the apartment, again, ranting about Seon Ho missing deadlines. While in the shower, Seon Ho keeps on checking in on Muyeong, making sure he doesn’t leave. Unaware of Minyoung’s presence, he continues by apologizing for the kiss and other things Seon Ho thinks were inappropriately done. This surprises Minyoung, and she excitedly teases Muyeong who tries to clarify things only to no avail. Thinking she’s intruding into what was supposed to be a “love” affair between the two, she promptly excuses herself and leaves.

When Seon Ho finally comes out of the shower, Muyeong tells about Minyoung. Seon Ho then once and for all tells Muyeong that he’s neither dating Minyoung nor there is something going on between them. As for the resignation, Muyeong says that he wants to stop doing “stupid” things — that is, liking Seon Ho. Seon Ho tells him to not stop liking him and requests Muyeong break up with his “boyfriend,” Do Ha.

Do Ha, on the other hand, is confronted by his girlfriend who manages to get photos of him kissing Muyeong. She tells him that he should go after the person he likes instead. Unfortunately, a car hits Do Ha as he gets too caught up in his thoughts about Muyeong. Muyeong then rushes to the hospital. Luckily, Do Ha is fine, but he also learns from Do Ha’s girlfriend that they have broken up, and that Do Ha actually likes Muyeong.

Oh My Assistant Ep 8

Episode 8 – A Happy Ever After?

And finally, we’re down to the last episode! But with the complexity of all these entangled feelings and relationships, ‘Oh! My Assistant’ isn’t ending without some good drama, right?

Do Ha tells Muyeong that now he’s broken up with his girlfriend, he already has the courage to confess to the person he likes, except that he will do it once he fully recovers. As Muyeong stays by Do Ha’s side, Seon Ho is left alone in a restaurant, downing soju bottles. Muyeong has left him twice for Seon Ho when they have already shared mutual feelings and therefore dating. Seon Ho feels dejected, almost like he’s a nuisance and a side character against Muyeong and Do ha’s already established closeness.

On Seon Ho’s birthday, Seon Ho wakes up to Muyeong already in his apartment, preparing seaweed soup. The seemingly happy start of the day turns sour when Do Ha’s caretaker calls and tells Muyeong that his friend is missing. Seon Ho says that if Muyeong leaves, it’s already over for them. Muyeong then hands him a letter and leaves, to Seon Ho’s disappointment.

When Muyeong returns to the hospital, he sees Do Ha back in his bed, already fully recovered. He then proceeds to confess to Muyeong. Muyeong, seemingly unfazed because he already knows, apologizes and tells Do Ha that “he’s a really good friend.” Do Ha understands and says that if Muyeong and Seon Ho break up, he can always come back to Do Ha.

Meanwhile, back in the apartment, Seon Ho begins to read the letter — Muyeong’s long-kept confession letter that he wrote back in high school. Seon Ho leaves and runs for the hospital and meets Muyeong in the park. There, they reaffirm their feelings for each other, and for the second time, no longer in the room but out in the park, for all the people to see, they share a kiss.

A lot has happened in this second half. If we’re to be quite honest, it feels like a lot of information has been left out because it has to be packed into just four episodes. This leaves the audience with some questions, perhaps possibly answered only if we read the webtoons (as this recap is coming from a non-reader’s point of view). Still, ‘Oh! My Assistant’ somehow keeps some enjoyment — it’s still easy, chill, and fun with just the right amount of angst to keep you going ‘til the end.
