Naughty Bird’s-eye Views in ‘Secret Spectacles’

Secret Spectacles

Often, we are asked what superpower we would choose to have if given the chance. Would you like to be able to fly, make someone fall in love with you, or be able to control the elements a la avatar? Perhaps, be invisible and be able to spy on people? You naughty freak!

Well, in this short BL film produced by Strongberry and directed by Jun Bum (Open, 2015), our hero, Jin Gyu (played by Jin Gyu, yes, they have the same name), acquires a magical pair of glasses that, well, lets him see everybody stark naked, including his classmate and crush, Sun Tae (played by Choi Woo Jae).

Sounds fun? Read up if you’re curious to know more about ‘Secret Spectacles,’ but do be cautious because spoilers for the film are up ahead.

‘Sometimes, magical things happen in this world. And a magical thing happened to me.”

Secret Spectacles

The film starts with the shy Jin Gyu and the charismatic Sun Tae conversing in a quaint coffee shop one night. Based on their conversation, we can assume that the two of them are paired up for a project which Sun Tae complains about.

Sun Tae claims that their professor only favors pretty girls and gives them good grades. Despite another group giving a better presentation, Sun Tae says their professor gave an A+ only to a girl named Yoon Jin who was the prettiest and cutest in their department. That last part is what Jin Gyu chooses to focus on and he asks Sun Tae whether he thinks Yoon Jin is the prettiest (Sun Tae says yes, everybody thinks so) or whether Sun Tae has tried to make a move on her. Sun Tae coyly replies maybe he has. Anyway, Sun Tae says they can’t do anything about it but exert more effort and try to do their best. Sun Tae then segues if Jin Gyu is free on Saturday while brushing off non-existent dirt on Jin Gyu’s cheek. Oh, he’s suave. Jin Gyu supposes he is and adds nobody will be home that day. He even proposes they can finish early and they can have chicken and beer after. We see what you did there, Jin Gyu!

Later on, we see Jin Gyu on the bed, expressing to a friend that his heart was fluttering like crazy because of Sun Tae but that he was upset that Sun Tae seemed to like Yoon Jin. Although he adds that Sun Tae looked extra handsome tonight because he wore glasses and wonders whether he should get glasses as well. He’s clearly whipped.

After hanging up, Jin Gyu immediately looks for glasses online. He stumbles upon one that is listed as clairvoyance glasses. He is initially skeptical but we don’t see whether he buys it or not.

Saturday comes and they work on their presentation for a few hours. Sun Tae complains it is a lot of work for just two people and asks for a break. Jin Gyu stretches and stands up to reach for (ha!) the clairvoyance glasses that he apparently purchased. He tries it on, looks back at Sun Tae, and sees him naked, except his family jewels are covered with a throw pillow. Music bursts into Jin Gyu’s mind (hilarious!) and he is stupefied. Sun Tae then looks up at him and asks what’s the matter. Jin Gyu brushes it off and says he just remembered something. Sun Tae smiles.

The two continue with their work but Jin Gyu is hilariously distracted. Sun Tae’s dangly bits are still covered by the pillow and we can feel his desperation radiating through the screen as he attempts to pry it out of Sun Tae by asking for the cushion. Sun Tae hands him the cushion and Jin Gyu immediately tries to peek only to find a book covering Sun Tae’s private parts. Cackling!

Jin Gyu then asks for the book on Sun Tae’s lap. Sun Tae gives it over but not without asking why Jin Gyu is suddenly wearing glasses. Jin Gyu says it is just for fashion and asks if it suits him. Sun Tae doesn’t think so and claims he looks better without it. Jin Gyu makes a move to remove the glasses only for Sun Tae to stand up, baring himself in all his naked glory to Jin Gyu. Sun Tae excuses himself to the bathroom and leaves a stunned Jin Gyu who removes the glasses in the belief that it’s distracting him from the task at hand.

Sun Tae comes back (a whole lot more decent in Jin Gyu’s eyes) and then it is Jin Gyu’s turn to go to the bathroom. Sun Tae eyes Jin Gyu’s glasses, reaches for it, inspects it, wears it, and then waits for Jin Gyu. Jin Gyu comes out and notices Sun Tae wearing his glasses. Sun Tae amusingly asks him why he’s suddenly naked, and Jin Gyu feigns ignorance and says he’s going to shower. He asks Sun Tae to bring him a towel and underwear but he ignores Jin Gyu. Instead, Sun Tae asks him why he’s suddenly wanting to take a shower. Jin Gyu continues to lie and says it’s because he smells. Jin Gyu asks Sun Tae to bring him the glasses too under the guise of wanting to see himself with them under the bathroom lighting because he will look good. He’s squirming and Sun Tae is incredibly amused. Ha!

Sun Tae teases him and claims he’s feeling too lazy to stand up. He tells Jin Gyu to just do it himself with a huge grin on his face. Jin Gyu is speechless and makes no move. Sun Tae asks if he’s shy. Jin Gyu answers affirmatively and adds there’s something else, something he can’t bring himself to say. Sun Tae ruthlessly tells him to then put his clothes on and take the glasses. Poor Jin Gyu!

Jin Gyu asks desperately if he could just bring the glasses over. Sun Tae asks why he’s acting so weird and why he’s so obsessed with the glasses, clearly enjoying torturing Jin Gyu. Jin Gyu says he will explain everything later and insists on having the glasses. Sun Tae finally takes pity on him and tells him he’ll take off the glasses so he can come out of his hiding from behind the wall. Sun Tae takes it off and Jin Gyu is once again clothed.

Jin Gyu is relieved. But something dawns on him. Jin Gyu asks if Sun Tae knew about the glasses all along. Sun Tae initially feigns ignorance. Jin Gyu is confused. Sun Tae breaks into a smile. He asks if Jin Gyu remembers the glasses he wore to the cafe last time. Jin Gyu remembers it. Sun Tae then teases him and asks why he wants to see his body so badly. Does he like Sun Tae?

Jin Gyu says no and that he only wanted to test something. Sun Tae says it’s a pity because he thought Jin Gyu liked him. Jin Gyu is stunned. Sun Tae stands up and saunters to Jin Gyu. With a hand on his shoulder, Sun Tae asks Jin Gyu to confess if he likes him. Jin Gyu maintains he doesn’t. Sun Tae tells him he can tell the truth, goading Jin Gyu, to be honest. A beat passes before Jin Gyu finally says in a small voice that yes, he likes him. Sun Tae asks him to repeat it and Jin Gyu does with an apology in tow. Sun Tae breaks into a huge grin and says there’s nothing to be sorry for. On the contrary, he’s actually thankful. Sun Tae confesses that he likes Jin Gyu too.

Sun Tae berates him for not getting his hints and Jin Gyu counters that Sun Tae said he liked Yoon Jin before. Sun Tae denies it and says it was all Jin Gyu’s assumption. Jin Gyu is happy but a little baffled. He asks whether the glasses Sun Tae wore last time are the same as his. Sun Tae says yes and it’s because he wanted to see him. Jin Gyu blushes profusely and asks if it’s true that he likes him, not as a younger brother but as a lover. Sun Tae nods and takes Jin Gyu in his arms for a warm embrace.

Moments later, we see Sun Tae meet with Jin Gyu outside, with Jin Gyu wearing the glasses again. We learn that it’s been a year since they got together and Sun Tae asks if he wore the glasses so Jin Gyu could ogle other men. Jin Gyu says it’s so he could see Sun Tae’s sexy body even outside. Sun Tae says he sees it every day anyway. Sun Tae pulls off the glasses from Jin Gyu’s face and presses a kiss on his lips, with romantic music accompanying them as the film ends.

Awkward, typical K-drama kiss aside, ‘Secret Spectacles’ was a fun and lighthearted watch and something that will tickle everybody’s naughty fantasies about seeing their crushes naked (hopefully with consent!). Jin Gyu played the shy and timid character so well and Choi Woo Jae was absolutely charming as Sun Tae.

The film starts with Jin Gyu saying that ‘sometimes, magical things happen in this world. And a magical thing happened to me.” Now whether that is something preternatural as magic glasses or just plain ol’ love, everyone should definitely be on the lookout for that special kind of magic.
