Episode 7: The gift I’ve always wanted to receive

Before Jin Woo met Ki Sub in his hometown, his father’s laboratory assistants called him, requesting him to return home to deliver an important document. However, since Jin Woo was not at his rented house that day and Ki Sub was there, his father ended up asking Ki Sub to deliver the document instead.

Jin Woo sees Ki Sub waiting for him on the other end of the station, returning him to the present. Ki Sub asks Jin Woo where he has been and how his sudden disappearance worried him; the latter explains that he got caught up studying. Jin Woo questions why Ki Sub abruptly left after admitting his failure, but Ki Sub maintains his composure by explaining that it was because Jin Woo already met Hye Jin on the first day of snowfall. Jin Woo clarifies that he doesn’t have a romantic relationship with her and prepares to confess, but a call from the laboratory interrupts their discussion. Ki Sub speculates that Jin Woo’s father may have been worried so much that he asked their landlord to check up on him, but Jin Woo disagrees. He then says that his father only looked for him because he needs the document that Ki Sub has. Unable to comprehend why Jin Woo’s father will think less of his son than a piece of paper, Ki Sub tears it apart. He goes on to explain that he only went along with Jin Woo’s father in the hopes of finding him. When Jin Woo picks up the papers, he recognizes his father’s handwriting and realizes that it is a vital part of the research and instantly panics. Ki Sub attempts to piece the paper back together until Jin Woo tells him that he will handle it instead.

Finally, the two travel to Jin Woo’s childhood home, where Ki Sub attempts to piece the paper together once more. Meanwhile, Jin Woo receives a video call from his dad, asking him to talk. He apologizes for the torn document and promises to have it fixed by the next day. He also says that he’s the one who tore the paper, but his father seems to not buy it. To his surprise, his father asks him if his friend, Ki Sub, was the one who tore the paper apart, knowing full well that he wouldn’t do it given the importance of his research. Jin Woo admits that he knows his father’s research is more important than his son’s. Jin Woo’s father then says that Ki Sub gave him an earful earlier that day and tells him little things about Jin Woo, like his favorite food or his routine. Jin Woo’s father admits that the research helped him forget the death of his wife. He also saw it as a way to portray himself as a perfect father, but now he realizes how wrong it was. Jin Woo’s father is happy that someone understands his son’s comfort zone. The father and son reconcile and promise to reconnect once the former comes back.

Jin Woo enters his bedroom’s attic and discovers all of his childhood mementos, at the same time, Ki Sub, who is searching for him, sees the stairs to the attic and joins him. The two discuss how Jin Woo’s father told him they could throw the paper even though Ki Sub had finished taping it. As Ki Sub approaches him, Jin Woo becomes flustered and complains of the attic being too small for the both of them before rushing downstairs. Meanwhile, Ki Sub sees on his smartwatch that his heart is beating fast. Later that night, Ki Sub lies awake on the floor while Jin Woo sleeps on the bed. Ki Sub then exits the room and prepares a list of activities to do on a date. Meanwhile, Balg Eum, whom Ki Sub calls on the phone to consult with, continues to isolate himself from the world. The next day, Jin Woo finds Ki Sub all dressed up and waiting excitedly for him. The latter says that they have somewhere to go while clutching the piece of paper he worked on the night before. They head to a museum, and although Jin Woo complains about it being boring, he finds himself enjoying the activity with Ki Sub. The last part of the museum activity included stargazing under a makeshift sky. Ki Sub tells Jin Woo that it is his birthday gift and gives him a boarding pass headed to outer space with his name on it. Jin Woo initially doesn’t seem to understand what is happening, until Ki Sub reveals that he has seen a note from Jin Woo, written when he was still a child, expressing his desire to travel to outer space. While he cannot go into outer space, Ki Sub figures that at least his name can. He also has two boxes of cake for Jin Woo, one from him and the other from Jin Woo’s father.

Jin Woo calls out Ki Sub’s name before hugging him tightly. He then tells Ki Sub despite being completely opposite of his ideal type, he still likes him the way he is. He continues by asking Ki Sub to date, but the latter is suddenly unable to answer and ends up saying sorry to him.

Episode 8: The promise of love at first sight

The following day, Jin Woo hears Ki Sub calling him and finds the latter back with straight hair and clutching an envelope. Ki Su determinedly tells Jin Woo that he likes him and wants to go on a date, a revelation that contradicts their previous conversation. He explains that he has finally solved the problem that was bothering him and that it was his upcoming migration to the United States.

In a flashback, Ki Sub finally tells his older sister that he will no longer go to the United States and apologizes for agreeing before, despite not really wanting to. While his sister believes that going to the United States will help Ki Sub’s apparent heart condition improve, he believes that staying here is the cure. He also says that because of Jin Woo, his heart races fast, and it calms down when they are together. Back to the present, Jin Woo laments the distance that prevents them from being together, but Ki Sub assures him that he will no longer go and his family is actually supportive and excited to meet Jin Woo. Ki Sub promises to stand by Jin Woo’s side and Jin Woo unexpectedly kisses him in response.

Later that evening, Ki Sub suggests they have dinner at Balg Eum’s part-time job, but becomes concerned when he doesn’t answer his calls. When they visit Balg Eum’s apartment the following day, they discover the mailbox full. Jin Woo offers to wait, while Ki Sub heads inside to find Balg Eum, whom he sees is all holed up. Ki Sub is dismissed by Balg Eum, but the latter refuses and checks in on him. When Balg Eum declines to respond, Ki Sub recalls that Balg Eum exhibited similar behavior during their high school days, when he initially split from In Ho. To Balg Eum’s surprise, Ki Sub expresses that the situation has improved, as Balg Eum has finally made an effort to meet In Ho, in contrast to what he did back then. Balg Eum then agrees to eat with Ki Sub and remains silent when Ki Sub mentions that Jin Woo will be joining them, as he instantly understands that the two are finally together. While waiting for their orders, Ki Sub shows a poster from Balg Eum’s part-time job, which is seeking part-timers for the upcoming New Year’s party. After learning that Jin Woo and Ki Sub will be doing it, Balg Eum agrees to join them. Meanwhile, Ki Sub reposts the poster, hoping that In Ho will see it. On the other hand, Balg Eum and Jin Woo have a serious conversation about the former not knowing what to do with his life outside of doing part-time jobs. Jin Woo promises Balg Eum that he will help him figure it out in the coming days.

When the New Year’s party finally arrived, the owner complimented Ki Sub for attracting a large number of customers, but he was hesitant with Jin Woo, who was struggling with manual labor. However, Ki Sub disagrees with him and says that his boyfriend is doing alright. To Ki Sub’s surprise, Hye Jin arrives at the party and is stunned that Jin Woo is talking to her in a very friendly manner. Although Hye Jin continues on with her hateful attitude, Ki Sub proudly tells her that he and Jin Woo are now together. Meanwhile, In Ho also arrives at the party after seeing the ad from Ki Sub. However, In Ho’s intent this time is to apologize to Balg Eum after he realizes that he didn’t think about his feelings back then and only thought about his desire to get back together. Balg Eum, on the other hand, asserts that he really likes In Ho, which is why he doesn’t want him to see his flaws. However, he recognizes that relationships shouldn’t operate in this manner. He asks In Ho to meet him again once he has become a better person. Hopefully, on their third meet-up as they have previously agreed on.

Later, Ki Sub reminds Jin Woo to write his wish on the wish card so that it will come true. Jin Woo struggles to come up with wishes because he has so many, while everyone around him, including Balg Eum and Ki Sub, seems to be doing it effortlessly. Balg Eum writes down his wish to become a better person, a distance away from them, In Ho hopes of properly confessing his feelings by the time they meet again. Just as the countdown begins, Jin Woo wishes for Ki Sub’s wish to come true, while the latter wishes that they see the first snow together and recognize that they belong to each other at first sight.

In another flashback, a serious-looking Jin Woo is walking upstairs just as a carefree Ki Sub is making his way downstairs. The two catch each other’s eyes and end up making second and third glances when the other is not looking.

Writer’s Thoughts:

We have reached the end, and we must say that it is a bittersweet ride! Let’s start with In Ho and Balg Eum’s story which is incredibly relatable, not only for same-sex couples but also for anyone whose insecurities stem from within. We appreciate that the show did not sugarcoat their story with a sudden happy ending, but instead showed that there is love and patience. For the time being, we are content that they are both aware of their parts in the issues in their relationship and can work through them at their own pace, even though we wish we could see when they will meet again. Still, we would be thrilled to see their journey continued in a second season or spin-off!

On the other hand, our chaotic roommate couple is the picture of university love that most of us wished for! It’s cute how Jin Woo went from the rigid or aloof person he is to someone who is now willing to try new things or take a risk. We also appreciated how he expressed his true feelings to his father, demonstrating a level of self-awareness that went beyond the origins of his personality. Meanwhile, Ki Sub finally learns to say no and follow what his heart truly desires. Although his tendency to always say yes occasionally annoyed us, it also left a lasting impression on us, one that we will always cherish. The show, in all honesty, went beyond the typical love stories and showcased some really interesting character growth. Overall, ‘Boys Be Brave’ is a must-watch for this year’s KBL roster, so be sure not to miss it out, and we’ll see you on the next one!
