Are You Willing To Go Through The ‘Summer Grass’?

What if you find out that who you like is not exactly the type of person that you would think you’d like? Find out how the situation will pan out in the Korean short film ‘Summer Grass‘.

Choyeop meets up with her old friend, Kangii after a long time of not being able to see each other. But Choyeop actually has an initial intention – to find out if she likes Kangii or not. The two of them meet up at a park while drinking coffee. There, they started talking. Choyeop was about to ask him something, but Kangii mentions that Do-ah, one of their friends, was sending him a message. Choyeop paused for a while and eventually asked him what he thinks about her. Kangii was taken aback and asked her why she suddenly asked about that. Choyeop says that it’s because she thinks they look good together.

Kangii smiles and admits that he does feel a slight interest in her and wants to get to know her better. However, he thinks that she only sees him as a friend. Choyeop, the ever-supportive friend, says that he thinks Do-ah likes him, and that it was obvious by the way she looks at him. Kangii mentions, though, that Do-ah wanted to be close to Choyeop. In fact, she wanted to go meet Choyeop. After waiting for a while, Do-ah showed up and immediately hugged Choyeop. She admitted that she did come from her house because she wanted to meet Choyeop so badly since it is hard to meet her. She even prepared fruits, particularly apples, Choyeop’s favorite fruit. Choyeop was surprised that Do-ah remembered what her favorite fruit is. Do-ah becomes a bit touchy with Kangii, and Choyeop stares from a distance, seemingly not knowing what she truly feels.

Meanwhile, as Kangii goes off to wash his hands, Do-ah looks at Choyeop and praises her eyes, saying it looks pretty. Choyeop says that her eyes are prettier. Do-ah then asks for a bite of her apple, and she gave all of it to her. Showing obvious signs of interest, Do-ah asks Choyeop when did he meet Kangii, to which she says that they met 10 years ago and that they were just comfortable with each other that’s why they got on well. Do-ah says that she thought the two of them were dating because of how close they were. Choyeop, then asks Do-ah what she thinks about Kangii. But before she can answer her question, Kangii arrives with a picnic blanket.

He invites the two of them to lie down and look at the sky together. Choyeop immediately goes to sit down (looking quite uncomfortable), while Do-ah takes her sandals off, walks on the grass, and lies down on the picnic blanket. Choyeop found her interesting since she is a lot freer than her uptight personality. She made moves to leave, but Do-ah pulled her back and the three of them lies down on the blanket while looking at the sky. In the scene, you can see Kangii looking at Do-ah, Choyeop looking nowhere, and then turning to look at Do-ah, who also looked back. Choyeop looks away, and looks back again at Do-ah, while Do-ah smiles. Choyeop dreams about running barefoot with her two friends. She finally wakes up and even though she spent the whole day tightening her shoes, she finally took off her shoes, just like what Do-ah did. She finally felt free.

Choyeop, the uptight young woman, taking off her shoes is a sign that she might be willing to open up to more possibilities. Although she seemed like she probably did not know Do-ah’s feelings (which was quite obvious), she did seem like she is finally open to exploring that side of her heart. We can only hope that the two of them will be in it together.
