Episode 3

The character designer, Ishi Teruyoshi, happens to be a dirty old man who is a fan of beautiful ladies. After meeting Nanase, he gets over his initial reluctance to join and starts to like her. Once they have his consent, Itsuki and Nanase go to a café to relax, and the former remarks that the latter appears unable to handle possible sexual harassment. She continues by saying that, in her opinion, Itsuki and Fuyu have fairly similar personalities, which takes Itsuki by surprise. She disputes their similarities immediately, and Nanase apologizes right away as she also recalls how Fuyu has treated Itsuki ever since she started working for the company. When they get back to Dynamic Dream, Itsuki sees Fuyu engrossed in a phone conversation and can’t help but think back to when they were still dating and in college—Fuyu has always been a diligent worker. Afterward, Fuyu returns to their room and informs them that Vincent and they will be having their first virtual meeting to discuss the state of the game development the following week. She also asks about Ishi’s involvement with them, to which Nanase responds that they received the agreement after she followed Fuyu’s advice to charm him. Finally, Fuyu informs them that a top-notch composer and scriptwriter must be available for the meeting. Itsuki responds that finding one will be difficult because they are most likely booked in advance, but Fuyu brushes her worry aside, even claiming that her skill at lying and theft should allow her to easily snatch them away. As Itsuki is ready to respond, Fuyu answers her phone over the loudspeaker and discovers that Ayaka is calling to ask for a day off because her child is sick. To the surprise of all, Fuyu answers coldly, saying that one shouldn’t bring personal issues to work. While this is going on, Risa, who is also experiencing menstrual pain, asks to leave work early. Fuyu sarcastically says that leaving work early because of menstrual pain makes women look unreliable in comparison to men and orders her to put up with it. Since the team is made up entirely of women, Itsuki tries to step in and asks Fuyu to show consideration. She charges Fuyu with power harassment, citing what she has discovered to be a common practice in China. Fuyu agrees and says that it’s called “workplace bullying.” Fuyu tells Itsuki that she can sue her if she can’t take her management and questions her if she believes that defending a woman’s dignity is worth losing a job that pays billions of dollars globally. Risa says she will just put up with it and keep working to please everyone, but Itsuki pushes her to go home for the time being.

Afterward, the concept artist team asks for help in designing the game’s storyboard and requires models to strike a wedding-ready pose. After seeing their opposing images, the concept team asks Fuyu and Itsuki to do it instead of Nanase, who offers to do it. Having no other option, the two get dressed up in bridal gowns and take pictures. Itsuki finds herself admiring Fuyu’s beauty despite their initial awkwardness with each other—the shoot demands they be physically and intimately close. The photographer gives them instructions to touch each other’s faces and asks them to gaze at each other tenderly. Itsuki becomes conscious of their unexpected proximity, but Fuyu seems to be at ease holding her. The concept artist team is happy with the two’s final appearance and appreciates their assistance. As soon as the photographer decides to call it a day, Fuyu leaves Itsuki’s side.

Later, Itsuki receives a message from Aoyama asking her if Tenyo Sekkai is being developed by Dynamic Dream. She immediately denies it until Aoyama tells her that posting it on the Chinese website will generate noise for the team. Meanwhile, Nanase finds a popular music composer to work for them which makes Itsuki wonder how they managed to book him. Nanase excitedly shares that Ishi helped them book him after she sent a video of her and Risa asking him to eat with them sometime. Kubo, who is listening on the side, asks them if it’s okay to book professionals by using themselves, but Nanase counters that if men can do hard labor for success, then women can also use their charm and sex appeal. Kubo answers that people will generalize that all women work the same way as Nanase, who threatens to call Ishi and cancel their agreements. Itsuki immediately stops her and gets questioned by Kubo if she also approves of using women’s charms and sex appeals to secure jobs. While she doesn’t necessarily agree with it, Itsuki answers that they are already running out of time, leaving them no choice but to do so. Nanase dares Kubo to find a top-notch writer by the end of the week without using her charm or sex appeal. Kubo accepts the dare and leaves the room while Itsuki looks worriedly at them. The following week, the whole team is praised for being able to hire a fantastic team, as Kubo also manages to convince a popular writer to do their script. Knowing the dare between Nanase and Kubo, Itsuki asks Kubo how she managed to sign up the popular script writer, to which she answers that she wrote him a sincere letter explaining how his talent is necessary to make the whole game work. Nanase sulks on the side, but Fuyu approaches her and tells her that they still managed to book Ishi and the composer, all thanks to her effort. The following day, the team received the grading of their presentation, which fell at 71 points, which did not reach the passing score of 80 in China, and felt torn about it.

At home, Tsuki tries to ask Fuyu to play with her, but the latter is too busy with work. Fuyu also gets mad at Koh, who forgot to buy her milk because he had run after Tsuki. Fuyu arrogantly tells Koh that she doesn’t want to hear excuses and reminds him that she is the reason why they can afford their lifestyle. Embarrassed, Koh tells Fuyu that he will go to the grocery to buy her milk. After Koh leaves, Fuyu checks her annual performance and notices that her mark went down when she was on maternity leave. She couldn’t help but say that she could have gotten higher marks if she didn’t get pregnant. Tsuki, who is now alone in her bedroom, returns to Fuyu who scolds her for not going with Koh instead, before she returns to work. Meanwhile, Koh, who stopped by the playground to rest for a while, stares at a happy family playing in the swing. His mother-in-law reminding him that he is lucky to have a wife like Fuyu, and Fuyu telling him that she’s the reason why they can afford their lifestyle, flashes through his mind. He sees Fuyu calling his phone and ignores it. Back at their house, Fuyu takes Tsuki out and runs unknowingly into Aoyama, who recognizes her. Aoyama takes a photo of Fuyu’s house and sends it to Itsuki, who is currently out with her mother. Later that afternoon, Fuyu returns home and finds the house empty of Koh, while Tsuki complains of being hungry.

Itsuki looks for Fuyu’s house and finds it using the photo that Aoyama sent her. She ends up going back and running into a little girl who almost got hit by a car, but she manages to pull her towards her. To Itsuki’s surprise, she sees Fuyu running towards her, calling on the little girl she is holding in her arms. The little girl, Tsuki, runs towards Fuyu and calls her mom.

Writer’s Thoughts:

This episode covers a lot of topics, including workplace bullying, female empowerment, Fuyu’s ongoing animosity toward Itsuki, and the unfortunate sexual harassment that women endure in the toxic corporate world. It’s remarkable how the show portrays a realistic picture of how women who balance work and family life eventually find themselves compromised. It also discusses how a woman’s biological characteristics may be contested or used as a benchmark for evaluating what she can truly accomplish. Even though it is painful to watch the show, they did a pretty good job with it. The perspective of Koh, with whom we are currently genuinely sympathizing, is also presented in Episode 3. Given how coldly Fuyu treats him and minimizes his role in their family, we are eager to see where this plot will go, especially given that Koh vanished after becoming depressed over Fuyu’s remarks.
