Episode 4. Beyond the Gloomy Rain.
A flashback began. On December 30, 2011, Masumi, Ritsu, and Yosuke hung out together and still can’t believe another year is over as time flies so fast. Yosuke wonders if the two will be visiting their parents for new year’s eve. Ritsu replied with no and explained that airfare is quite pricey these days. Masumi also responded that he lives close by but the trip is quite a hassle. Masumi and Ritsu arrived at Masuqmi’s apartment in the cold outside and Ritsu turned on the heater. Following Masumi’s response earlier, Ritsu suspected he and his mom don’t get along with each other and so he asked her to tell him more about her. A long silence happens as it fades to Masumi’s childhood memories. Masumi grew up with his mom without a father figure. He even got beaten, whenever his mom got mad and wished she shouldn’t give birth to him. At that young age, he experienced the worst and there was nothing he can’t do aside from crying and cleaning the mess he did.
During high school, his mom found out about his sexual orientation. Despite her feeling disgusted, his mom is envious of him because no matter what he does because he will never get pregnant. That’s the reason why he studied so hard to get away from his mom to repay her for everything. After hearing Masumi’s story, Ritsu finds him kind despite all of the things he experienced with his mom. He even went so far as to send his scholarship money monthly. He asks Masumi if they can spend new year’s eve together, to which Masumi delightfully accepts it.
Back to the present, Masumi smiles as he remembers it was the best new year’s eve that he experienced. Masumi wakes up to the sound of his phone alarm next to the side table. Yuma asks if they can postpone their plan of accompanying him but Masumi turns it down as they only have six days left before the world ends. The moment the rain stopped, the three went on a trip to accompany Yuma home to his parents. They, then, stopped by Kamino Bridge next to Tokyo Bay, where they took a commemorative selfie.
While Ritsu and Yuma get drinks at the unlocked beverage vending machine, Masumi receives a call from a blocked user which turns out to be his mom begging him to help her. Hearing her urged Masumi to pack his belongings to go to Chiba using a bike. Ritsu stops him as he reminds Masumi that he already cut ties with her. Masumi insists on heading to his mom’s place but Ritsu jokingly says he will go home instead. As the three continued their trip, they decided to stop again to watch the sunset. While watching the sunset, Masumi can’t stop himself from shedding tears thinking about his mom as the coldness of his heart gets filled with despair.
