Hiro rushes to the festival after work but arrives too late to get any yakisoba as the stall is closing. Disheartened, he walks straight home. Upon returning, he finds Kai eating yakisoba with an extra pack on the table. Kai explains that he bought it since Hiro didn’t seem like he would be able to make it with him. Despite Hiro’s offer to share, Kai insists he should eat it since he knows Hiro enjoys festival yakisoba. Kai remarks on how he thought festivals were supposed to be lively but this one feels lonely, perhaps because it was close to closing. Hiro apologizes to Kai, feeling bad since he was the one who invited him but broke his promise. Hiro is really upset since he was looking forward to it. Seeing Hiro sad, Kai pats him on the head and apologizes, understanding his disappointment. Hiro wishes Kai would express more anger at being stood up, but Kai remains indifferent. Hiro realizes he could have made different choices but ends up delaying their promise. As they eat yakisoba and Kai takes a bath, Hiro senses something is amiss. The next morning, Hiro wakes up to find Kai already up and breakfast prepared. At work, Hiro’s coworker notices that he’s once again putting up a wall. Given that it had been easier to talk to him over the past month, they wondered what might have caused this change. Kai arrives at the restaurant just as a customer approaches to ask about Kenji’s discharge and about Kai’s well-being, expressing her loneliness that the restaurant is closed. Kai reassures her that he’s staying with an acquaintance, alleviating her worry that Kenji might have forced him out. This prompts Kai to recall the time when Koji advised him to refrain from visiting Kenji for a while. Meanwhile, Hiro enters the restaurant and notices the apron hanging on the chair, reminding him of the first time the old man, Kenji, gave it to him. It was during this moment that Kenji taught him to cook, passing on his recipe book and encouraging Kai to prepare meals not just for himself, but for someone else.
Hiro is eating his packed lunch at work when Kaneko asks if Hiro has properly thanked Kai. Kaneko mentions that when his wife made him bento, he would often nitpick on trivial things, causing his wife to become angry. Kaneko advises Hiro that when someone does something for you, you need to reciprocate. This prompts Hiro to realize that he hasn’t done anything in return, even though he is letting Kai stay at his place. Meanwhile, Kai goes to the hospital to give Koji a key before immediately leaving. Back at Hiro’s workplace, his boss assigns him more work once again. Hiro’s coworkers inquire why he isn’t angry and express their own frustration. Hiro explains that while it’s frustrating, he understands that he’s a slow worker and never expects to be home on time in the first place. This realization leads him to understand Kai’s attitude and why Kai doesn’t get angry. Back at the hospital, Kenji questions his son about the keys in his hand, wondering if he went to the restaurant. Koji reveals that Kai gave him the keys and explains that he has been discouraging Kai from visiting him and urging him to leave the store. Kenji tells him to do as he wants since he knows Kai is someone who has likely given up on everything and has been living like that his whole life. Hiro returns home to find Kai asleep on the sofa, dinner prepared on the table. Instead of waking him, Hiro notices a book in Kai’s hands about making cute bentos and begins to flip through it. As Kai wakes up to heat up his meal, Hiro calls out to him and tells him that feels guilty about missing the festival and wants to make it up to him. Despite Kai’s indifference, Hiro mentions that he is troubled by the situation. He retrieves a book from his bag, explaining that he bought it for information on summer festivals. Hiro flips through the book and asks Kai what he wants, but Kai requests that they sleep together.
