Being Seen and Being Appreciated in ‘Our Dining Table’ Ep 2

Our Dining Table

Curry and deep heart-to-heart conversations are next on the menu of  ‘Our Dining Table’.

Our Dining Table

It’s a new day in Minoru and Tane’s household. Minoru tells his younger brother that he needs to get ready quickly or they will be late. Before they get to leave their house, the brothers come back to bid their mother’s photo goodbye. The middle-aged man in the first episode, who is revealed to be the brothers’ father, appears inside the house as well and says hello to the smiling woman in the photo

Yukata is sitting in his office and spares a glance at his calendar. He remembers Tane’s request for curry in their next meet-up. Yutaka draws a red circle on the date.

At the Ramen shop where Minoru is working, his boss asks him if he did indeed pause his university education to take care of his younger brother. Minoru confirms. The boss replies to him that his dad is still around and can take care of Tane. Minoru is quick to defend his father by adding that his father is already doing his part and he can do what he wants. The boss agrees and tells him that he is still young anyway. Minoru adds that his family is important.

Tane and Minoru are walking back home when Tane asks his older brother what they will be having for dinner to which Minoru replies yakisoba. Tane sulks for a bit, lamenting that they’ve had it before but Minoru says that they have no choice as their dad only had a few pottery classes. Tane asks when he can eat Yutaka’s curry and Minoru says on Saturday. Tane says he can’t wait for the day to arrive.

After their dinner, Minoru and his dad talk about Tane’s fascination with their new friend. Minoru carries his brother to his room after a while. His dad looks at his sons and whispers to himself that Tane is not the only one excited to cook and share curry with Yutaka. Before the scene ends, an artwork made by Tane is shown. It includes a wonky but adorable drawing of his father, Minoru, him, and Yutaka.

Yutaka in the next scene is seen alone in his office, finishing up his work. Out of nowhere, Minoru appears on his phone, calling him. Yutaka accepts the call and is welcomed by Tane’s enthusiastic cheers, telling him that he is excited to cook tomorrow and that he will wake up early. Tane asks him if they can start earlier than planned. Minoru snatches the phone to apologize but Yutaka quickly replies that doesn’t mind, telling the brothers that he will be there early. He smiles at his phone, excited for what the next day will bring.

However, Tane gets a fever on their curry-making day. Yutaka rushes to Minoru’s house to bring Tane some food while he is sick. Minoru on the other hand is nonstop in his apologies especially because they asked the man to start their day earlier. Minoru reveals that Tane gets sick whenever he gets too excited about something. Tane asks if Yutaka is leaving already but Yutaka reassures him that he will stay until he gets better. He promises that they will get together again once he is okay. Minoru observes him and his care towards his younger brother. He quietly comments that he is kind. However, he didn’t realize that Yutaka heard him. Minoru elaborates that he is kind because he understands that sometimes even when dates and schedules are set, there are great chances that they can be rescheduled because of the fickle nature of children and their health. Yutaka comments that this is normal but Minoru counters this by saying that not a lot of people understand that. The two share a short moment of understanding.

Tane breaks the moment, however, stating that he is hungry. The two venture into the kitchen to whip up a porridge for the sick kid. Yutaka then offers to create something with the porridge out of what’s left in their refrigerator. In the porridge, he adds scrambled eggs, shredded crab sticks, and a little bit of salt. Minoru is amazed by this and tells him that he too wants to learn how to be a better cook to make his younger brother happy. Yutaka feels endeared by the words of the man and absentmindedly starts to pat his hair. Both of them are startled by the realization of his action. Yutaka explains that he got carried away.

Yutaka sits down and reassures him that the fact that he is trying is already commendable. He lets him know that his efforts are enough. Yutaka adds that it’s no use if they are eating fancy food if they can’t even smile while eating. A sudden memory of Yutaka’s childhood flashes again and his table is filled with expensive dishes. Instead of a happy and young Yutaka, however, he looked miserable and alone surrounded by luxurious meals. Minoru picks up on this and asks if this is his story. Before Yutaka can reply, Tane comes inside the kitchen and gets a whiff of the porridge. At the table, a seemingly recovered Tane is joyously eating his food.

Minoru and Tane’s father arrive and check up on Tane, hugging the kid. He brings out the instant noodles and side dishes he bought for their lunch. They enjoy their lunch together with Yutaka. The father asks if Yutaka is Minoru’s friend from college but Yutaka butts in and says that he is no longer in school and that he already works. Minoru asks how old he is and it is revealed that both are the same age, 23. Minoru comments that he thought Yutaka was older and Yutaka voices out that he thought that Minoru was younger as well. Minoru adds that for him, Yutaka looks calm and tired, even.

Both try to speak informally with each other and Yutaka is flushed, trying to enunciate Minoru’s name without honorifics.

Yutaka is about to head home when Minoru thanks him for being there for his family. Yutaka shares with him his insecurities, telling him that he is not that capable and might not be that reliable. Minoru stares at him and tells him that his presence is enough. He adds that Tane is happy and so is he.

Tane gives him a leaf and asks him when they will meet again. Yutaka tells him they can share a meal next week. Tane pushes and says he should just live with them.

Back at home, Yutaka puts the leaf between the pages of his notepad and remembers Minoru’s words, smiling at the reminder that his presence is welcomed and loved.

Minoru comes inside Tane and his father’s room and recalls Yutaka’s reassurance. As he checks in on his brother, he remembers a memory from some time ago of someone who looks like Yutaka.
