Episode 2

After finding out that Aoyanagi dated a girl before, Akafuji proposes that they practice their kissing scene. Aoyanagi, meanwhile, praises Akafuji’s acting abilities and believes the invitation is something he will say in his role. Taken aback by Aoyanagi’s innocence, Akafuji lies and says that it is indeed something that his character would say. He then runs outside to hide his embarrassment as he couldn’t believe that he almost kissed his idol. Ultimately, he realizes that his shock upon discovering that Aoyanagi had a girlfriend before is not a feeling that a fanboy or stan would feel towards his idol. He concludes that he has fallen in love with Aoyanagi.

Akafuji watches bitterly as Aoyanagi converses with female actor Tendo after filming a scene with Ryoga. It turns out that Aoyanagi is confiding in Tendo about how one should react when their fellow actor asks them to practice a kissing scene off camera. Even though Tendo initially finds it unsettling, she later considers the possibility that it could imply that the co-actor may genuinely harbor affection for the actor after Aoyanagi claims that he didn’t feel harassed or uncomfortable at all. It seems impossible to Aoyanagi that Akafuji would feel anything for him. Later on in the afternoon, Yayoi requests that they make a promotional video in which Akafuji suggests giving a back hug to mimic what their characters will do. Unexpectedly, the scene with the back hug had so much chemistry that it made everyone in the studio squeal, especially when Akafuji whispered that he wanted to make Aoyanagi his. Meanwhile, with Akafuji’s arms around him, Aoyanagi feels his heart palpating more quickly than usual. He is overjoyed by the positive reactions the promotional video receives from people, even though he can’t forget how Akafuji’s hug made his heart race.

Aoyanagi meets Ryoga on his way to work, who is being followed by a female fan, and helps him. Ryoga reveals that he was stalked as a high school student and that this traumatized him around girls; for this reason, he chooses to project an arrogant image on the screen. Ryoga notes that Akafuji, whom he addresses by his first name, Yuijiro, is another person whose real personality differs from his cool persona, as the two discuss maintaining an image in the industry. He shows Aoyanagi the picture of Akafuji with his pet, which he left with his manager. Even though he lives with Akafuji, Aoyanagi realizes that there are still many things the two of them don’t know about one another. Meanwhile, upon seeing that Ryoga calls Aoyanagi by his first name, Hajime, Akafuji grows envious of their friendship. Aoyanagi goes along with Akafuji on his day off the following day in an attempt to get to know him better. To his surprise, Akafuji does things that are related to his upcoming shows even on his day off. Though his initial goal was to get to know Akafuji better to develop a closer bond with him, he also realizes that he gets upset when he thinks Ryoga knows Akafuji better than he does. To Akafuji’s surprise, he brings up the kissing scene once more and asks him to go along with it. Akafuji’s phone rings as the two get closer and interrupt them.

Eventually, Akafuji gets more certain that he likes Aoyanagi when he thinks back to the moment when he almost kissed him. Aoyanagi calls Akafuji by his first name at some point after filming promotional material, but he later retracts the gesture, which lessens Akafuji’s excitement, though he pretends not to mind. They didn’t notice Joji observing them intently on the side.

Lacking a confidant, Akafuji confides in Ryoga that he has feelings for Aoyanagi, but he is unsure that Aoyanagi will feel the same way since he has only dated women. Akafuji stays silent and claims that it’s a secret when Ryoga makes fun of him for liking Aoyanagi from his orange juice commercial. Since they share a residence, Ryoga cautioned Akafuji against acting recklessly, like trying to kiss Aoyanagi, as this could cause their show to be canceled. The second promotional video, in contrast to the first, becomes a mix of positive comments about Akafuji and some of his fans expressing their disappointment that he is paired with Aoyanagi. Upset, Aoyanagi gets home and finds Akafuji, who offers to stay in the living room for the night in an attempt to minimize their interaction and make sure that Aoyanagi won’t interpret his actions as being beyond the lines. On the other hand, the sudden distance set by Akafuji made Aoyanagi feel that the former was just living up to his character. Additionally, he is reminded of the difficult period in his life when everyone around him only saw him as the orange juice child star or the role he plays—never as the person he is. Aoyanagi begins to avoid him at home and on their set, telling himself over and over again not to get carried away with Akafuji’s kindness. Meanwhile, Akafuji starts to wonder if Aoyanagi’s cold attitude means he found out about his romantic feelings towards him.

Aoyanagi accepts Ryoga’s invitation to hang out on their day off after he notices the distance between the two co-stars. On the other hand, Joji and Yuki go out for a drink and talk about their actors’ relationships. Joji tells Yuki about Aoyanagi’s low self-esteem and the reasons for it. Despite his hopes that the new show and Akafuji will help him recover, he believes that things have gotten worse. After a few more drinks, Joji starts flirting with Yuki, much to his annoyance. After waiting for Ryoga at their meeting spot the next day, Aoyanagi gets a message from him informing him that he won’t be able to make it. He went into tears even though he knew that someone like Ryoga would never really have time to hang out with a homebody like him. At that moment, Akafuji shows up and is taken aback to see him. Akafuji says he was meant to meet Ryoga there as well, but he gets a message from the latter telling him not to waste the chance. He realizes that Ryoga set them up. Pretending to do something that their respective characters will do, he asks Aoyanagi to go on a date. They eventually arrive at a family restaurant. something that Aoyanagi has never tried before. Aoyanagi is given a tour of the area and even taught how to operate a beverage bar by Akafuji. On the way back, he took him to the game center as well, where they had an absolute blast and ended the day by taking pictures in a photo booth. When they are hanging out at the pier, Akafuji asks Aoyanagi why he was crying earlier. Aoyanagi talks about how he feels like the Orange Juice commercial and his other roles are the only things people see him as. Even his parents, who separated over money when he was a child, don’t seem to truly see him as Hajime Aoyanagi. Blurting out that he sees Aoyanagi, Akafuji reaches out and holds his hands, telling him that he has always thought of him as an incredible actor and that living with him has shown him many good qualities, such as being considerate and kind. He almost slips up and tells Aoyanagi that he likes him, but manages to stop himself after the former thanks him sincerely for making him feel better.

After returning to Aoyanagi’s apartment, Akafuji asks him out of the blue if he believes that a date ends with a kiss, like in their show. When Aoyaganagi agrees, Akafuji moves in closer and kisses him. Aoyanagi, meanwhile, quietly apologizes to Akafuji in his head for lying and acknowledges that he never imagined that they were only acting in their roles on their date. Aoyanagi nods when Akafuji asks if they can practice more. Later on, Yayoi informs them that the kissing scene is not going to be included in the script because they believe it does not fit with the personalities of Momoshiro and Mitsutani. As the two exchange uncomfortable glances, Joji asks Yuki if the two should stop living together.

Writer’s Thoughts:

After a long wait, the first kiss finally occurred—off-screen! Even so, we couldn’t help but chuckle when Aoyanagi and Akafuji were told that the kissing scene would no longer be included in the show. Additionally, there seems to be chemistry between managers Joji and Yuki, but will they have the time to pursue it given how busy they are dealing with their actors and their push-pull relationship? Stay tuned for BLTai’s recap of ‘I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama’s’ finale episode, which will be released soon, to see how everything plays out!
