Jameela Jamil Denies Feud With Bella Ramsey Over Gendered Award Categories

Jameela - Bella

‘She-Hulk’ actress Jamieela Jamil clarified that she is not feuding with ‘The Last of Us’ star Bella Ramsey over the issue of gendered award categories following their exchange of opinions on Instagram.

After non-binary artists like Emma Corrin, Emma D’Arcy, Sam Smith, Justin David Sullivan, and Bella Ramsey called for more inclusive categories, on June 18, Jamil posted on her Instagram her thoughts on the issue. She wondered if it would be “better to give non-binary people their own category rather than open the door for Hollywood to completely shut out women given the disproportionate amount of versus women winning at award shows.”

She clarified that she wants “to open more doors and create more tables, not narrow the opportunities for everyone, including GNC (gender non-conforming) people.”

People then started pouring comments on their own takes on the issue, including Bella Ramsey themself who shared their thoughts on their Instagram Story.

Re-sharing Jamil’s post, they said that they “feel weird about there being a whole new category. I think it’s more about language. I would love award categories to be ‘Actress/Non-Binary Performer’ and ‘Actor/Non-Binary Performer’ then the performer can be submitted into their preferred category.” They recognize that it’s “not a perfect solution,” but that is their take on the controversial topic.

As the exchange reached fans, people began speculating that Jamil and Ramsey are at odds with each other, which Jamil quickly denied.

Posting also on Instagram, she clarified that she and Ramsey were actually sending each other “really lovely messages and just discussing it together as everyone should because we are all in this together.”

“My post clearly states that I am just asking. I’m not telling anyone what to do. We all want the same thing, equal opportunities for all. We are all on the same side here. The side of love and of men not just sweeping all the awards because the industry is still a little behind,” she wrote.

As of today, among EGOT (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys), only the Grammys have presented gender-neutral awards which began in 2012.
