In an interview with British Vogue, Ramsey, 19, revealed that they struggled with anxiety regarding their pronoun and sexuality.
“When ‘The Last of Us’ first came out, I was like, ‘Everyone just calls me ‘she’ because I look like a ‘she’ to you, so it’s fine,’” they said. “But now I’m able to vocalize it more, being called ‘they’ is the most truthful thing for me. That’s who I am the most.”
Ramsey revealed that despite being confident on set, they are actually timid in real life which contributed to their difficulty in coming out as nonbinary.
“I’ve fought that word for so long. I didn’t want people to think I was just trying to be trendy. But it’s a very succinct way to describe to people who I am.”
In January early this year, ‘The Last of Us’ star came out as nonbinary in a New York Times interview and said they use any pronouns. Ramsey initially said that it does not so much bother them what pronouns people use to describe them, although they wish viewers would stop calling them a “young woman” because of how they appear onscreen.
