The short film ‘Khar Taw Mi’ is the latest BL project from Trust Production, known for ‘The Star’ and ‘Bagan Beginning’, featuring Vita Min and Zaw Shine Htet along with Khit Hsu Hthyin, U Chit Sayar, and Mar Mar & Group, and is directed by Kelvin.

The short begins with the serendipitous collision of a young man, careening on his bicycle, crashing into Nway Oo after a loss of brake control. The next day, Nway Oo finds himself at Win Maung’s residence, encountering his son, Ko Thein Myat Min—the very person he collided with. Initially, Thein Myat suspects Nway of following him due to the mishap. However, it emerges that his father has requested that Thein Myat mentor Nway Oo in singing, as the latter is new and slated to perform at the upcoming Thingyan festival.

Their practice sessions commence, but Nway Oo struggles, visibly affected by breathlessness, evoking tears. Through unwavering dedication, Nway overcomes his challenges, his passion not escaping Thein Myat’s notice. The two had a quick conversation and ended up going to Mandalay Hill to watch the sunset together.

As their time together progresses, a shift occurs in their relationship. One night, Thein Myat hands Nway Oo—whose name signifies “spring”—a letter, expressing how the spring brings a cooling breeze to his heart, akin to a tempest’s embrace. Thein Myat hopes for Nway’s comprehension of the letter’s sentiment. However, Nway misconstrues it as a Dhamma epistle, asserting his youthful unpreparedness for monkhood in his response letter, disappointing Thein Myat. Consequently, Thein Myat gathers the courage to confess his feelings, prompting a blushing Nway to request departure due to encroaching darkness.

The Thingyan festival arrives, serving as a backdrop for Thein Myat’s solemn vow of loyalty to Nway, likened to the clarity of water within a silver pot beneath a towering tree—a vow sealing their tale’s conclusion.

‘Khar Taw Mi’ is a beautifully short film that weaves together themes of chance encounters, personal growth, and budding romance against the backdrop of cultural festivals. The climax where Thein Myat confesses his feelings and makes a vow of loyalty during the Thingyan festival, is a poignant moment that brings their story full circle. The symbolism of the clear water in the silver pot under the big tree underscores the sincerity and purity of his commitment to Nway Oo.
