Heart-stirring Scenes in ‘Individual Circumstances’ Episodes 1 to 4

Individual Circumstances’ follows the war-like reunion between troubled writer Woo Jae and struggling director Yeon Woo.

We see the contrast between the two characters in the series—Woo Jae is the cold and distant character while Yeon Woo is the opposite, with his lively and cheerful personality. We get navigated through the episodes with some of Woo Jae’s inner monologue, his written story accompanying the development of the two’s rekindling relationship.

The series is filled with moments that tug at your heart, it pulls you in and leaves you wondering what truly happened between Woo Jae and Yeon Woo. With scenes that alternate between the present and past, the reason why Woo Jae ‘disappeared’ is slowly unfolding in the available episodes of the series.

Several moments especially made us feel butterflies and then tension the next. Here are some of the key scenes in the series that stirred our hearts:

Episode 1: Keeping an old number

After pestering Su Hyeok (the one in charge of Hyber’s web novels) to try and convince the writer J-Dog (Seong Woo Jae) to have his work “How To Break Up With Your First Love” adapted into a movie, Yeon Woo finally got the writer’s number to meet up with him even though Su Hyeok has warned him the writer would be against it. Once he sees the number, we get taken into a flashback of when the two were still on good terms. Since Woo Jae has been getting many weird phone calls, they discuss changing their number to each other’s birthday. Yeon Woo suggests it’s fun and that they would never be able to forget each other’s birthday that way. Who knew a phone number could have a bittersweet meaning to it? It seems effective since it appears Yeon Woo already had a feeling the writer he would be meeting up with is WooJae, given that the first thing he says to him is, “It’s been a long time, have you had breakfast?”.

Episode 2: The wall to conquer

Woo Jae tries hard to ignore Yeon Woo’s antics but eventually calls the cops on him, though they quickly retire after thinking the two must have had just a small fight between friends. In spite of being displeased at the sudden appearance of Yeon Woo, Woo Jae makes no further actions to actually push him away. It’s hard to tell if he’s actually happy or not about their sudden reunion, but one thing is for sure, Yeon Woo has unlocked something in his heart once again. Yeon Woo being outside, knocking, and waiting for Woo Jae to let him inside his house is very symbolic of the situation their relationship is currently experiencing.

Episode 3: Bean Sprout Soup

Yeon Woo gets sick after waiting in the rain for Woo Jae, hence the next day it’s unexpectedly quiet outside. Woo Jae finds it odd that Yeon Woo has been staying in his makeshift home the whole day, so he climbs up the tent Yeon Woo has set up atop his car and discovers he’s running a fever. In this scene we can see how Woo Jae is slowly opening his heart by giving Yeon Woo medicine —even though he claims he only did it because he didn’t want anyone dying on his property— and even going as far as actually complying with Yeon Woo’s request to make him bean sprout soup. We find out in another flashback that the food is what Woo Jae would always make whenever he was sick, Yeon Woo even claiming it was all he needed to get better. Woo Jae reluctantly gives him rice (obviously after Yeon Woo asks him for it).

Episode 4: Drunken(?) Accident

(Image: GagaOOLala)

Woo Jae’s manager comes to chase away Yeon Woo, who claims he and Woo Jae are close friends. Yeon Woo honestly doesn’t care about the two’s bickering and is only focused on the wine he’s clearly been downing since earlier on. Once inside the house, his manager offers to kick out Yeon Woo but Woo Jae only managed to say he’s not sure. At this point, Woo Jae is clearly conflicted so he goes out to confront Yeon Woo to find closure in the story he’s been creating and remove the inner thorns in his heart. In a drunken stupor, he trips and falls on top of Yeon Woo and just…stays there. We find out the next day when he wakes up that he actually wasn’t completely drunk and chose to stay in that position. Way to take advantage of the situation! But it’s clear that the small accident has shifted something and made them a little closer compared to their first reunion.

Despite ‘Individual Circumstance’ being the production company’s first BL, it’s evident they put effort into the series even though they were on a tight budget. It seems to have a well-written back story that is slowly being revealed. We’re looking forward to seeing Woo Jae continue narrating his own story through his writing and eventually finding out the reason for his ‘disappearance’. There will definitely be more angst in the upcoming episodes. Yeon Woo might just need a little bit more perseverance to break through the walls Woo Jae has built, but it looks like he’s almost there.
