Teenage Crushes and the Mess They Bring in ‘After A Day: Haru’

Looking for a quick GL to watch? This one might be just what you’re looking for. ‘After A Day: Haru’ is a Korean Girls’ Love story told through a 20-minute short film where the titular character, Haru, navigates her way through her feelings and the drama of high school life. How does it go? Keep reading to find out.

It all starts with an encounter between Haru and her classmate Gina. The two were walking separately on a hot summer day when Gina turned to Haru, telling the latter that she was not like her, to which Haru did not reply.

The scene then shifts to a classroom setting. Haru woke up from her nap to see that the boys in the class were changing their clothes in the classroom, prompting her to complain to the boy next to her that they should be changing in the dressing room instead. He ignores her request, though, until another group of girls walks in and their reaction is not nearly as calm as Haru’s was, leading to screaming and tossing things across the room.

Later, Haru and a friend of hers, are getting ready for P.E. class in a bathroom stall when Haru’s friend sprays perfume on her, claiming that Gina uses that perfume every day. Haru complains, but her friend explains that using this perfume will help her deny the rumors that she likes girls rather than boys. Haru, however, fails to see the connection between perfume and the aforementioned rumor, but her friend replies by telling her that putting on the perfume is better than doing nothing about it. Haru’s friend then proceeds to try to partially unbutton Haru’s outfit, to which Haru complains, calling the outfit alteration “slutty.” Her friend disagrees, however, and says other girls like Gina look great with their uniforms like that.

Haru’s friend then tells her to put fake blood on her gym clothes, revealing why they were there in the first place: to fake a period. Again, Haru does not understand the need to do this and is even worried about someone else taking notice, but her friend insists and Haru gives in. They then return to the classroom and are greeted by quite a scene.

Students were gathered around, reading aloud a secret letter they found by an unknown person professing their love for their classmate Hyukjun, the boy Haru was talking to earlier. Haru says she doesn’t believe someone would like Hyukjun that way, but he brushes the comment off, calling her jealous. The boys then notice Haru’s button, but she avoids the topic by grabbing the letter and saying that confessing secretly like this instead of in person was creepy.

Later in the day, Haru sneakily glances at Gina and draws her in her notebook. She continues to stare but accidentally locks eyes with Hyukjun, who takes notice of what she is doing. This then prompts him to approach her and ask if she likes Gina, which she denies. Hyukjun then reveals to her that he thinks it is Gina who wrote him the letter and he thinks they would be a good match, while Haru feigns disinterest in response.

Gina suddenly approaches them and asks if she can speak to Haru alone. Gina tells Haru that she is also on her period, not knowing that Haru faked hers, and asks Haru to join her in washing their gym clothes.

As the two wash their shorts, Gina asks Haru about the rumor of her liking girls, to which Haru responds by saying it is nothing more than a rumor. Gina then asks if Haru has a crush on anyone. Haru says no, but has a sudden vision of Hyukjun. When Gina then reveals that she wrote the letter to Hyukjun, Haru imagines herself drowning Gina in the sink.

Gina asks Haru for help to win Hyukjun over, and despite Haru’s hesitation, Gina insists on it. Haru then panickedly flees, leaving her gym clothes behind, leading Gina to realize that the blood is fake.

Hyukjun then stumbles upon Haru and starts a conversation with her, trying to cheer her up as he noticed earlier that she seemed upset. He inserts a little flirting into the conversation, which only frustrates Haru. She then realizes, though, that she left her gym clothes when she ran from Gina and rushed to get them back. Haru’s friend approaches her and Haru starts to panic, explaining that Gina took the shorts and they run off to find her.

When they do find her, she’s with Hyukjun and tells him about how she thinks Haru is a lesbian and that she found it weird that Haru had been copying her lately, as well as revealing how Haru faked her period. Gina cries to Hyukjun, claiming that Haru might follow her home as Haru and her friend hear the entire conversation. Haru’s friend tries to step in and confront Gina, but Haru stops her.

Haru’s friend takes her anger out on Gina’s desk, spilling juice on it, which Haru disapproves of. Her friend argues, but Haru just wipes the spilled juice off the table. Hyukjun then walks in, asking Haru what she is doing in an accusatory tone. This results in a verbal confrontation between the two and Haru walks out.

Haru bawls her eyes out in the bathroom and has a flashback to her and Gina running together on a football field. Gina tripped, causing Haru to win the race. The truth of the memory was then revealed, however, with the true events being that Haru fell over and lost the race to Gina. Haru watched sadly as her classmates praised Gina for her win while she sat on the ground until Hyukjun approached her to comfort her and check on her wounds. He tells her “After a day, you’ll be alright.” Haru smiles to herself and the credits roll.

Just as viewers think the story was cut off there, an extra scene comes in after the credits. Haru is shown taking out the garbage when she suddenly seems uncomfortable with her skirt. A bloodstain is shown on the back of her skirt, showing that she had her first period, symbolizing her finally maturing.

Aside from the romance plot, ‘After A Day: Haru’ chose to also focus on Haru’s journey of maturation in response to the trials she faced in school, resulting in a compelling story about the trials of high school life. Make sure to check out ‘After A Day: Haru’ on GagaOOlala for more!
