Starring Im Seon Woo and Lee Seo Yeong, ‘Floating Deep Down Summer‘ is an award-winning short film directed by Cho Hye Jin. It tells the story of photographer Hyeri, who gets an invitation to a wedding from an old acquaintance and ex-lover. Hyeri is undecided about whether or not she will travel. Juhyun the curator is incredibly confident and at ease with her sexuality. Hyeri, who believes she is not being honest with herself, progressively falls into Juhyun.

The film opens with Hyeri receiving a wedding invitation from her ex-lover. That night, she had a meeting with a client at a cafe when a woman suddenly approached her and asked her if she was the photographer, Hyeri Jung. The woman says she was honored to meet her, and she’s always been a fan of her work. She thanked her and told her she couldn’t talk to her any longer because she was meeting someone soon. She asked her if she wanted an autograph. They are both shocked by what she says and ask her if she’s Juhyun Lee, the client she’s meeting that night, and the latter says yes. They started their meeting and discussed what to do for her exhibit. Juhyun felt that she was being uncomfortable in the cafe, so she asked her to continue the discussion in her place. She told her she was fine and that they should start wrapping up because it was getting late. After their discussion, they bid goodbye, and before leaving, Juhyun offered to drop her off at the station, but she refused.

At home, her friends are teasing her about what happened in her meeting with Juhyun. She told them that she was really embarrassed at that time. Her friends told her that for Juhyun, it could have been a flirt because she says that she has dated some girls before. One of her friends asks if she comes out at work, and she says that she doesn’t hide it and that she’s comfortable with her sexuality. Hyeri says that she’s jealous of her because she knows what she likes. One of her friends says she wants to meet her, and the other says if she goes to her exhibition, she will meet her because she is in charge of the whole exhibit. Her friend also asks her if she already has a plane ticket to Venice to attend his ex-lover’s wedding. She says she’s not going because of work schedules, but her friends told her that it would be awkward for them to go without her, but she assures them that she’s not going.

The next day, Hyeri woke up early to continue her work. Juhyun arrived at her house, and she noticed that she went there in a hurry because she hadn’t even dried her hair. She lent her a hair dryer and gave her a cup of hot tea so she wouldn’t catch a cold. Juhyun looks at her work and asks her when she started taking photos. She said that she started when she was in high school after a friend gave her a camera. She told her that her friend was good at drawing, and she got interested when she drew her, but when she tried to portray her, she couldn’t capture how much she liked her in her painting. So she just started taking pictures. Hyeri also asked her when she started her work. The latter says that she studied Fine Arts before, but it didn’t fit her well. She got interested, and she said that she wanted to see her paintings sometime.

Juhyun showed her some of her sketches that she did mostly while traveling. While looking at her work, Hyeri noticed a familiar place on her sketch. She saw the way to Piazza Navona, a place in Italy. She said that she knows the place because she usually walks down that road when she stays in Rome. Juhyun says that she also went to Rome before and was on her way to an exhibition when she got lost. But she liked the place so much that she stayed there for the whole day. The two laugh at the coincidence that they went to the same place before. After looking at the sketches, they decided to go back to work. They continued their conversation in the car. Juhyun confessed that she has never drawn someone special because she’s afraid she won’t be able to express herself to the fullest. But she told her that if you admit that you can’t do something, later you can make it work. Her mood lightens up after hearing that, and she says that she will draw someone special one day.

They arrived at the place where the exhibition would be held and started to set everything up. Hyeri’s friend visits her and praises her work. She noticed that Juhyun set up everything smoothly. That night, Hyeri was looking at all the photos in the exhibit until one photo captured her eye. She looks at it as if it were something so important to her. She thanked Juyhyun for putting so much hard work into that exhibition. They both said that the photo they were starring in was their favorite, and Juyhun gave it a serious look. Hyeri’s friends came that night to congratulate her in advance. They had a mini-celebration and talked about some photos of their friend at her wedding. Hyeri’s friend asked her if she was in a relationship, and she said she was busy having one. Hyeri interrupted them, saying they were making her uncomfortable, so they decided to wrap up.

Juhyun excuses herself to get some fresh air. It was almost 5 a.m., and Hyeri followed her to the beach. She asked her if she could swim before taking her shirt off and going to the sea. Hyeri followed her, and under the sunrise, the two women kissed. The next day, Hyeri has an interview for her photography. The interviewer asks her when she feels most drawn to photography. She answers when she presses the shutter without realizing it. Because in that moment, she feels truthful to herself the most. The film ends with Hyeri looking at the sea with a smile on her face. And when she looks back, she sees Juhyun, and they both smile at each other.

The summer love tale of a lady who doubted her sexuality and a woman who is outspoken and confident about her identity is told in ‘Floating Deep Down Summer’, a delicate and uplifting summer romance.
