Total nostalgia! ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ showrunner confirmed that Alex Russo (played by Selena Gomez) and Stevie Nichols (played by Hayley Kiyoko) were almost a couple.
In Episode 8 of the ‘Wizards of Waverly Pod’ by original actors of the show, Jennifer Stone (who played the character Harper Finkle) and David DeLuise (who played the character Jerry Russo), the show’s original showrunner Peter Murrieta confirmed that Alex and Stevie could have been a thing! It ended the fan speculation that Alex and Stevie were a thing because it could have been canon, only unfortunately, it was not written as such due to constraints.
When asked about which storyline he wanted to explore further, Murrieta replied, “I wish we could have played more with what was quite obvious to us, which was the relationship between Stevie and Alex.”
Alex is one of the three Russo siblings, while Stevie was a “bad-girl” wizard who was in four episodes of ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’. Additionally, Murrieta mentioned that they did get as close as they did but felt restrained by the time. “If it was just a few years down the line, we maybe could have played with that,” said Jennifer Stone of the what-could-have-been plot.
Meanwhile, Hayley Kiyoko, who played Stevie and a lesbian herself, also mentioned in an interview last year how she acknowledges that her character was a part of some people’s ‘gay awakening’ and how she did not want to expose herself as a ‘flaming lesbian’ while filming for the ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’.
Disney Channel now has queer characters in their respective stories, but it came later than it should have.
