The animated series ‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ finally took off last November 17, but there is a new queer (specifically bisexual) twist in the new Netflix show.
Based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, ‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ serves as both the sequel and remake of the graphic novel and film ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.’ However, there are a few interesting things worth mentioning in the new Netflix animated creation.
‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ does not completely stick to the source material. In the original film, Scott battles Ramona Flowers’ seven evil exes so he can date her, namely Matthew Patel, Lucas Lee, Todd Ingram, Roxie Richter, Kyle & Ken Katayanagi, and Gideon Graves.
In the new animation, however, Scott loses, dies, and changes the course of everyone’s lives, the exes included.
As Ramona investigates Scott’s death, one of her exes, Todd, discovers that he’s bisexual and starts an affair with one of Scott’s gay friends, Wallace.
While there has been bisexual representation in the original material with Ramona and Roxie’s relationship, Todd’s bisexuality is a nice welcome to the queerness of the show.
Brandon Routh, who voices Todd, said that he’s happy with the changes made to the animated show. “The whole message of the whole show is to be open and just let love be love and joy and make music. I’m all about it. It’s really fun.”
