‘ENGAGED’ is a 17-minute-long award-winning short film that bagged “Best Short Film” in Reel Q: Pittsburgh LGBTQ+ Film Festival, the New Hampshire Film Festival’s Best Comedy Short, the CMG Short Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best Comedy, and Cinema Diverse Palm Spring’s Audience Award and screened in over 60 Film Festivals. David Scala directs and writes the short, which stars Daniel Isaac and Ryan Jamaal Swain as Darren and Elliot, alongside Victoria Meade, Candace Maxwell, and Maricelis Galanas.
The story follows Darren’s journey to propose to his partner, Elliot, with whom he’s shared five years of love and companionship. Despite his best efforts to pop the question during their fancy dinner at a restaurant, interruptions thwart Darren’s plans each time. Unfazed, Darren decides to try again over lunch, only to unintentionally become entangled in Kayla, Elliot’s sister’s, early engagement party.
The engagement party takes an unexpected turn when Darren and Elliot are roped into a “nearlywed game,” triggering Darren’s stage fright and sparking tension between the couple. Darren feels exposed and embarrassed by the spotlight, while Elliot embraces the moment as a testament to their relationship. Amidst the turmoil, Darren’s evening takes another unfortunate turn when he suffers an allergic reaction to nuts in the food, further complicating his plans.
