‘The Last of Us’ director Peter Hoar looked back at his “risky” decision to cast ‘Parks and Recreation’ actor Nick Offerman for the gay love story in the hit post-apocalyptic zombie HBO series and said that it paid off.
A lot of fans commended the third episode of ‘The Last of Us’ with its emotional and brave portrayal of gay love between characters Bill and Frank. It was an important episode, in fact. Hoar described preparing for it as “like prepping a movie, and getting to make our movie the best it could possibly be.”
While Murray Bartlett had already been listed to portray Frank, the actor for Bill did not come as quickly and without hesitation at first, at least for director Hoar.
In an interview with Deadline, Hoar said that when Nick’s name came up for the role of Bill, he “thought it was a bit of a risk.” But things changed when they finally met Nick. “I was struck by how gentle he is, and how little ego there was,” he said. “He saw immediately that he had this brilliant script, and he didn’t want to f*ck it up.”
