‘The Last of Us’ Creator Talks Nonbinary Bella Ramsey’s Best Actress Emmy Nom

Bella Ramsey

‘The Last of Us’ creator Craig Mazin has spoken up about non-binary actor Bella Ramsey’s lead actress Emmy nomination.

In an interview with Variety, Mazin revealed that he has discussed with Ramsey their gendered nomination.

Mazin said that it is a challenge because, on one hand, the conversation about gender has positively progressed in recent years, but on the other hand, moving away from gendered categories should not “shortchange traditionally overlooked folks– and we know that in non-gendered categories like directing and writing, women have been historically under-appreciated.”

This has been historically true, with several award shows getting in hot waters for snubbing women in their nominations, like the BRIT Awards 2023 Artist of the Year.

The creator continued to say that while he does not know the answer to how to proceed with this debate, he has “every expectation that nonbinary performers will soon be recognized in the respectful and appropriate way they deserve.”

Ramsey has previously spoken up about gendered categories in award shows, saying they hope the decision-makers will include nonbinary voices in discussions.

Ramsey initially considered withdrawing from the Emmys race and discussed other alternatives, but ultimately decided to contend in female categories even though they do not identify that way. This was in contrast to ‘Yellowjackets’ nonbinary star Liv Hewson’s withdrawal from the race on April 26.

Ramsey was not the first to express their thoughts on the topic as fellow nonbinary celebrities like Emma Corrin, Emma D’Arcy, Sam Smith, and Justin David Sullivan have called for a more inclusive category in the past.

As of today, among the EGOT (Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys), only the Grammys have presented gender-neutral awards which began in 2012.
