Is Chai Ji Dan’s ‘Stay With Me‘ a bromance or a BL?

Following the rumored kissing scene in ‘Stay With Me‘, which escalated on X (formerly Twitter)—which turns out to be true—fans were thrilled and frightened, as we all know that China’s media censorship is still in place. Nonetheless, the last four episodes aired on August 11–12 garnered mixed emotions towards our lead characters Su Yu and Wu Bi crossing the line between ‘brotherhood’ and ‘love’.

In line with all the kisses mentioned, these scenes happened in episodes 22 and 24:

The first kiss happened when a blackout occurred inside the classroom, where Wu Bi sneakily kissed Su Yu’s cheek which painted a smile on Su Yu’s face. After that, the power went back to normal and pans out to a fujoshi, our representation in the drama!

Followed by when the two went to the beach and camped out. Inside the tent, Su Yu took the initiative to kiss Wu Bi on the cheek while he was sleeping. And later, he wakes Wu Bi up to witness the beautiful sunset, where Su Yu gazes at Wu Bi and indirectly says “I love you” to him.

Lastly, the bedroom scene, which the director demonstrated to them, happened in the finale episode. While Su Yu was sleeping, Wu Bi gave him a morning kiss on his forehead, and cheeks or lips (?).

We had these kisses, but at what cost? Fans shared different reactions on social media accounts; others shed tears as their hearts were shattered by witnessing the car accident and Su Yu’s impeccable acting broke down. Meanwhile, some of them also predicted it would happen. The only question remained: what truly happened? Did Wu Bi die or survive the accident? If he survived, are we getting an amnesia plot in the reported sequel?
