‘Sex Education’ star Ncuti Gatwa just came out as queer!
In an interview with Elle UK, the ‘Sex Education’ star shared his truth when he looked back on a Pride incident that happened years ago.
The 30-year-old actor said that he remembered being at Manchester Pride, having fun when he saw a woman who looked like his auntie. Gatwa recalled that she told him that she did not really know why she was there but that she “was just there.” The actor then assured her that she did not need to know why. He said that what was important was she was there and that she should be proud of who she was.
“I had never met another queer Rwandan person before. I thought I was the only one in the world,” Gatwa said.
The Rwandan-Scottish actor has initially declined to open up about his sexuality despite speculation by fans who had related him to his character as the proud gay teen Eric on ‘Sex Education.’ Unlike Eric, however, Gatwa preferred to keep his sexual identity private. Ultimately, though, Gatwa realized through Eric the importance of representation, saying that it is “so powerful and necessary.”
