Broadway musical actor Ryan Steele talked about the gay fairy tale romance in the Britney Spears-inspired musical ‘Once Upon A One More Time.’
In an interview with Out, Steele expressed the importance of representation as far as audience members finding the gay romance in the musical “relatable.”
Steele said that his “favorite thing” is getting approached by an older generation of queer people who tell him that they see themselves “reflected on stage in the way that they see in our show.”
“It’s also interesting on the other end of that, to see these young kids and teenagers who are fortunate enough to see this representation now,” Levy adds. “It’s such transformative years in their discovery and self-discovery. We don’t take it lightly.”
‘Once Upon A One More Time’ is set in a fantasy land where princesses have a feminist awakening after reading ‘The Feminine Mystique’ by Betty Friedan, Prince Erudite (played by Steele), a trusted advisor of Prince Charming, falls for Clumsy (played by Nathan Levy), Snow White’s eighth dwarf and her personal attendant, who is also yearning for his own happily ever after.
