Pedro Pascal on Nonbinary Co-Star Bella Ramsey: “They brought the best out of me”

Pedro Pascal & Bella Ramsey

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have charmed the hearts of everyone in the Max hit series ‘The Last of Us.’ Now, Pascal has a few sweet words to say about his 19-year-old co-star and friend Ramsey in his Variety’s Actors on Actors series with Beef’s Steven Yeun.

In the dialogue, Yeun comments that it must have been a delight to have a co-star that is as immersed in the role and moment as Pascal was.

“I could tell (they) were cool. I knew that,” Pascal said about Ramsey being cast initially before him.

“I couldn’t have asked for a more anchoring, generous, and thoughtful teenager. And I don’t mean to say that in a patronizing way.”

Watch their Variety interview here:

In the show, Ramsey plays the queer teenager Ellie who is the key to humanity’s survival after a zombie apocalypse nearly decimates the planet. Ellie, who is initially antagonistic to Joel, played by Pascal, eventually forms a bond with Joel and begins to see him as a parental figure.

“They had their 18th birthday while we were shooting and that just could have sucked,” Pascal added. Ramsey was only 17 during the filming and has come out as genderfluid at the beginning of the year.

Pascal said it came easy for Ramsey and him to fulfill the chemistry needed in the show even though they were both scared and reserved about it.

“I relied on Bella for so much of the experience,” he added.

Pascal then continued to say how he has never met anybody like his teen co-star in that they inspired and humbled Pascal. “They brought the best out of me as a person,” he said.

This is not the first time the 48-year-old actor has spoken praises about someone in the queer community that is also close to his heart. Pascal has a trans sister named Lux whom he said in an interview with Esquire is “one of the most powerful people he knows.”

Ramsey and Pascal will reunite on-screen for the second season of the show which will begin filming later this year. The premise will pick up where the first season ended as they struggle to find a cure for the virus and is said to delve more into Ellie exploring her queerness.

The first season of ‘The Last of Us’ is available to stream on Max.
