‘A Small Light’, an ongoing series by Disney+ which retells Anne Frank’s story, will highlight the LGBTQ+ side of the anti-Nazi movement.
The eight-episode mini-series focuses on Secretary Miep Gies who helps her Jewish employer, Otto Frank — Anne Frank’s father — and other refugees during World War II. But more than that, ‘A Small Light’ also highlights the often untold stories of those involved in the resistance, including queer resistance. This includes the ones in Amsterdam’s homosexual bar Café ‘t Mandje and the life of Dutch artist Willem Arondeus who himself bombed Amsterdam’s public records to prevent it from getting into the hands of Nazi German officials.
