Netflix Cancels ‘Rebelde’, Another Queer Spanish-Language Series

The Mexican reboot of the 2004 series ‘Rebelde’ has come to an end after two seasons.

Netflix adopted the show and ran for two seasons from January to July 2022. However, according to Sergio Mayer Mori, one of the actors in the show, in an interview with Hola! Mexico, ‘Rebelde’ won’t be renewed for another season.

“It would be an honor for me to be able to do a third, fourth, and fifth [season], but that was no longer possible,” he said. “It was the producers who told us, ‘Thanks for everything guys, but a third season won’t be happening.’”

It appears that Mayer Mori has not made privy to the actual reasons for the cancellation. However, What’s On Netflix assessed the numbers of the show based on FlixPatrol data and revealed that ‘Rebelde’ “didn’t get off to the best of starts in the first season” and the second season even fared worse.

The original ‘Rebelde’ was kind of a precursor to ‘Elite’ but with a musical flair and less steamy scenes. Coincidentally, the show is set in a prestigious private academy called the Elite Way School.

Netflix’s version introduced new students who wish to be pop stars, trying to balance their daily academic responsibilities and their dreams to be the next big thing in the music industry. It also featured queer relationships, particularly the lesbian relationship between Andi Agosti (played by Lizeth Selene) and Emilia Alo (played by Giovanna Grigio), and also Luka Colucci (played by Franco Masini), the Argentinian transfer student who is outed as queer early in the show.

The cancellation comes as another sad news for queer fans especially when the news of ‘Smiley’, a queer romantic comedy Spanish language Netflix show, has also been canceled.
