May the 4th has been the “unofficial” Star Wars day, and as fans celebrated the highly successful sci-fi epic, an interview from the past resurfaced — one that talked about the sexuality of the main protagonist Luke Skywalker.
Seven years ago, in 2016, Mark Hamill, in an interview with Vanity Fair, said that Luke Skywalker, the character he is best known to have played, could possibly be gay.
For the longest time, many fans — especially queer ones — have wondered if Luke is gay. In the original Star Wars trilogy, with the exclusion of the incestuous kiss between Luke and Leia, the dashing smuggler Hans Solo is one-half of the films’ main romance.
Hamill’s response to that question was that Luke being gay is a valid possibility. “Fans are writing and [asking] all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out,’” he said. “They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’”
“I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer… If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
this is how actors should answer questions regarding their character being queer. fictional characters & their relationships are allowed to be interpreted however fans want, emily swallow is a fucking clown pic.twitter.com/Q40og0qcMM
