The first set of photos of the stars of the ‘Brokeback Mountain’ play is here, and we’re definitely here to climb that mountain!

Lucas Hedges (Ennis) and Mike Faist (Jack) are starring as the cowboy lovers for the new play version of ‘Brokeback Mountain’, originally portrayed by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Ashley Robinson wrote the new play based on Annie Proulx’s short story (the same story the 2005 movie was based on), with its songs created by Dan Gillespie Sells. Jonathan Butterell will direct it.

Sohoplace’s synopsis says, “Wyoming 1963: a wild landscape where people live in extreme rural poverty in tight, insular and conservative communities. When Ennis and Jack take jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain, all their certainties of life change forever as they flounder in unexpected emotional waters of increasing depth.”

Although a lot of people have seen Brokeback Mountain as a love story, play director Butterell refused to call it one. In an interview with The Guardian, he said, “It’s about the deep regret that Ennis still holds on to. People often say Brokeback Mountain is a love story. I don’t think it is. It’s a story of fear, and how it corrupts love.” Interestingly, he is also reluctant to call it a queer story. “Ennis could be a straight man going through a complex negotiation of his sexuality,” he said. Sells agrees, saying, “Of course, it’s about two men who fall in love and have sex. But there’s also nuance.”

Still, regardless of their thoughts, the story has attracted a sizable number of queer audiences. And as The Guardian puts it, queer people may “tire of such disavowals, and begin to wonder why the mountainous subject of sexuality keeps being reduced to a molehill.”

Brokeback Mountain started its run on May 10 and will last until August 12.
