Kit Connor Says ‘Heartstopper’ Helped Him Become More Confident About Himself

Ahead of the release of the much-awaited second season of ‘Heartstopper’, its 19-year-old star Kit Connor revealed that the show helped him become more confident about himself.

Connor, who plays Nick Nelson, spoke to the New York Times and talked about the impact of the Netflix show on him. “I’m a bit more confident in myself in a very open sense, about who I am, what I can do, the way that I hold myself, and the people I spend time with,” he said. “I have a lot more pride.”

It should be remembered that Connor was forced to come out in November 2022 after he was accused of “queerbaiting” following his role in the first season of ‘Heartstopper’. He left Twitter in September 2022 before returning to the platform to tell the world that he is bisexual. He also tweeted, “[C]ongrats for forcing an 18-year-old to out himself. [I] think some of you missed the point of the show.”

Connor also told the New York Times that he likes the term “queer” more, saying that it feels “more freeing.”

“I think coming out is stupid,” his co-star, Joe Locke, who plays Connor’s on-screen partner on the show, Charlie Spring, added, “that it’s still a thing that people have to do.”

While Connor earlier revealed to British Vogue that he didn’t feel “forced” to come out, he preferred he had done it another way. “At the end of the day, I don’t regret it,” he said. “In many ways, it was really empowering.”

‘Heartstopper’ season two starts streaming on Netflix on August 3.
