Gay Writer Russell T. Davies Says Andrew Scott Was Snubbed In Award Shows Because “He’s Gay”

Writer Russell T. Davies has opened up on why he thinks Andrew Scott was snubbed at the award shows for his role as Adam in the highly praised queer romance film ‘All of Us Strangers.’

At a panel with Attitude Magazine on February 24, Saturday, the ‘The Doctor Who’ and ‘Queer as Folk’ writer sounded off on the possible reason Scott was snubbed during the award season and said that it is probably because of his sexuality.

“What I think happened there was, when a gay man plays a gay man, he’s not considered to be acting. I genuinely think that happened there, that people thought, ‘Oh, he’s very good, but he’s not acting there. He’s not reaching; he was just being himself,’” he said.

Many expected Scott’s acclaimed performance in ‘All of Us Strangers’ to land him various awards and nominations but were left shocked when the film got zero nominations at the Oscars and while the movie received six nominations at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) of which none was won, the gay actor was also notably snubbed.

Scott was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance but lost to Cillian Murphy for ‘Oppenheimer’.

Davies was joined on the panel by ‘It’s a Sin’ actor Nathaniel Curtis, ‘Everything Now’ star Noah Thomas, ‘Shadow and Bone’ actor Jack Wolfe and ‘Heartstopper’ actress Bel Priestley who supported Davies’ sentiments with Curtis saying, “If a queer person plays a queer role, people are like, ‘Oh yeah, very well done, lovely.’ But if a straight actor plays a queer role, a lot of the time, they’re like, ‘Give them an Oscar.’”
