‘“From Dysphoria To Euphoria”: Drag Race’ Alum Adore DeLano Comes Out as Trans

‘Drag Race’ season six finalist and American Idol alum Adore Delano has come out as trans in an emotional video.

In a heartwarming Instagram video posted on Wednesday, Delano addressed the “questions” about her body and proudly said that she has been transitioning privately for the past few months which she likened to “going through puberty.”

“I have found it has been very enlightening and probably the happiest in my adult life,” she said.

The 33-year-old singer explained that she went sober two years ago in order to “deal with my feelings” as she went “from dysphoria to euphoria.”

Delano then reflected on her childhood experience, recalling that she initially came out as bisexual at 12 and presented as a girl all throughout high school before finally coming out as transgender to her mother who supported her.

However, Delano stated that she suppressed herself when the opportunity to participate in ‘American Idol’ came.

“I threw it away. I burned it. I reinvented myself into something that was so uncomfortable – it was almost like a sacrifice to get everything I wanted and it almost made sense to myself as a 16-year-old. And then I got on the show and then carried on the storyline to Drag Race,” she said.

Delano got cast in the seventh season of American Idol and made it to the top 16 in 2008. She would later compete on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ in 2014. She said she began to use alcohol to cope after exploring drag and separating her identity. “I tried to live it, y’all. I really tried to live it but it just did not code well with my spirit,” she shared.

However, since starting gender-affirming care by being on estrogen, Delano said she is now “loving life again”.

“I’m living in my world now, and it feels so empowering, and it feels so good. It feels so liberating.”

The drag superstar also stated that she will be taking some time off at the beginning of 2024 to follow through with her plans on getting gender-affirming surgeries.

She then thanked her fans for their love and ended the video with a powerful message, iterating that she is transgender and that her pronouns going forward are “she and her.”

Delano was also quickly showered by love and support from fellow drag artists like Courtney Act, Peppermint, Jinkx Monsoon, and many more.

Congratulations to Adore!
