Freddie Dennis, Sam Clemmett Talk About Their Steamy Scenes in ‘Queen Charlotte’

Bridgerton

The highly-anticipated ‘Bridgerton’ prequel spin-off series ‘Queen Charlotte’ has started streaming, and it has just become a lot gayer!

Freddie Dennis and Sam Clemmett play the roles of two queer men who have a thing for each other. Freddie Dennis plays Reynolds, King George III’s secretary, while Sam Clemmett plays the young Brimsley, Queen Charlotte’s secretary. Although their love and attraction are forbidden, they still sneak away and get it on wherever they can.

Of course, the focus of the series is Queen Charlotte and King George III, but with the addition of confirmed gay characters (as opposed to fan-surmised queer-coded characters like Benedict Bridgerton), it is a welcomed response, especially when queer fans have been clamoring for representation.

In an interview with Out, the actors talked about their experience filming steamy scenes on the set. “They created such a safe space,” Dennis said. “Obviously, with all intimate scenes, it requires vulnerability. The conversations we had surrounding the scenes and the fact that they were there on set talking us through and choreographing us just made it actually sort of an amazing, amazing experience.”

“It just allowed us to be able to throw ourselves into the scene themselves and focus on what we needed to achieve,” Clemmett added.

In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, however, what really tripped them up the most was the dance scene. In the finale, both footmen share a dance under a tree away from the eyes of the crowd of the Queen’s ball. It was a touching scene, but Dennis described it as “actually quite stressful” because he is “not a mover.” It was shot in a rush, and the two actually did make a mistake, but their giggling still made the final cut.

Now, the bigger and more important question: Are Reynolds and Brimsley going to have a happy ending? It’s quite difficult to say. In the finale, we see Brimsley reliving their stolen dance alone outside the palace. As for Reynolds, we aren’t sure. But Dennis said that he imagines and hopes Shonda Rhimes “has more to say about that.” He added, “You can see how much Reynolds means to Brimsley at that moment. So their love very, very much runs deep and lives on. I really hope he is not dead.”

‘Queen Charlotte’ is now streaming on Netflix.
