Former Disney star Karan Brar came out as bisexual in a touching essay about mental health.
In his essay for Teen Vogue titled “Karan Brar: How I Found Myself,” Brar talked about living alone after moving out which was difficult for him to do especially with his background as an Indian- American.
The 24-year-old actor wrote that he first came out to his friends, roommates, and co-stars Cameron Boyce and Sophie Reynolds while Brar was drunk.
Brar remarked that Boyce and Reynolds were incredibly accepting of him and his sexuality despite Brar offering to move out of their shared apartment after coming out.
“This was a crisp picture of what unconditional love looked like: my two best friends sitting across from me on a discount couch, waiting to hear me describe my type so they could take on their new roles as matchmakers. They weren’t going anywhere,” Brar said.
Boyce unfortunately died in 2019 which Brar said started the deterioration of his mental health which resulted in him isolating himself and resorting to getting drunk to cope. A severe mental breakdown finally pushed Brar to seek professional help and get admitted into an inpatient treatment center for my depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Three years later, Brar is fortunately doing better and pushing through his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder with the help of his medication.
