Filipino Queer Animated Film ‘Iti Mapukpukaw’ Is Coming To An International Platform

‘Iti Mapukpukaw’ also known as “The Missing” is finally coming to Netflix!

Production company Project 8 Projects announced on January 29, Monday, that the film will be available to the Southeast Asian region on the streaming service starting February 24.

Project 8 Projects also unveiled a cool poster to go with the announcement which you can see below.

The movie is a 2023 Filipino-Ilocano adult animated science fiction film written and directed by Carl Joseph Papa—the movie stars Carlo Aquino, Gio Gahol, and Golden Globe nominee Dolly de Leon.

‘Iti Mapukpukaw’ follows the story of Eric (played by the award-winning actor Aquino), a mouthless young man who untangles memories from his childhood after his uncle’s death. Eric meets an alien who wants to abduct him from Earth and tells him the alien left his power in Eric, making him the planet’s destined ruler. Gahol plays Eric’s love interest, Carlo, while de Leon plays Eric’s mother, Rosalinda.

The critically-acclaimed movie is written and directed by Carl Joseph Papa who is known for ‘Ang ‘di paglimot ng mga alaala (The Unforgetting) (2014)’, ‘Paglisan (2018)’, ‘Manang Biring (2015)’, and ‘Love Bites (2017)’.

‘The Missing’ is the Philippines’ official entry to the Best International Film Category of the 96th Academy Awards. It premiered at the 19th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival on August 5, 2023, where it won Best Film, Best Supporting Actress for de Leon, and a special NETPAC award. It is the first full-length animated film to compete in the history of the Cinemalaya.
