‘House of the Dragon’ star Emma D’Arcy lambasts the rising attack against trans people in their recent interview with British Vogue.

The Golden-Globe-nominated nonbinary actor said that trans and gender non-conforming people are in the headlines for all the wrong reasons right now with transphobia being more acceptable in the last couple of years.

“We are in a scary period of contraction, especially where trans rights are concerned,” they said. “I feel so deeply sad about the vitriol leveled against trans people and gender non-conforming people. I’m also incredibly aware that if I feel like this as a white nonbinary person, I know how much more hostile the environment is for trans women and for trans people of color.”

A 2021 study published by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law found that compared to cis-gendered people, trans men and women are four times more likely to experience violence and abuse, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault.

In addition, around one in every four trans women who were victimized believed the incidents are rooted in hate crimes compared to only one in every ten cis women who believed it to be due to their gender. Half of all victims of violent crimes did not report it to the police.

Furthermore, the media has rightly given attention to the 2020 increase in murders of transgender women of color, said lead author and an affiliate scholar at the Williams Institute Andrew R. Flores.

Despite the rising numbers, D’Arcy shared that being visible as nonbinary is the only meaning they can see in being a public person and hopes to inspire the next generation of non-binary actors.

“My hope is that the more trans people and gender non-conforming people that are visible in this industry, the more hopeful young people in the community will feel about the opportunities available to them,” they said.
