The September issue of Elle Hungary went against the anti-LGBTQ agenda of the government when it featured a pair of gay dads with their child on its front cover.
Titled “Born of Love,” the issue featured Hungarian restaurateur Hubert Hlatky Schlichter and his husband, neurosurgeon Laszlo Szegedi, with their baby daughter Hannabel. The two were kissing the child tenderly on the head.
In its statement, Elle Hungary said that it intends to “contribute to the acceptance of rainbow families” and to “campaign all over the country for love and all forms of family.” In its introductory article, Elle Hungary also said that the front feature “highlight[s] the simple truth: love knows no limits.”
Same-sex marriage in Hungary remains illegal. With the election of Viktor Orban, a hard-line right-wing politician, as prime minister, the government has enacted several anti-LGBTQ+ policies. In 2020, a law was passed that prohibited adoption for couples who aren’t married, effectively banning same-sex couples from adopting children.
