‘The Dads’, a documentary about parents fighting for the safety of and supporting their trans children in the US, premieres at the BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival.
The powerful and emotional documentary, created by ‘Mama Gloria’ director Luchina Fisher, will screen on Sunday, March 19. It follows the story of five fathers of trans children who take a fishing trip in Oklahoma. They are joined by Dennis Shepard, the father of gay student Matthew Shepard whose murder in 1998 triggered nationwide action against homophobia.
A 60-second teaser of ‘The Dads’ was exclusively revealed through PinkNews. “We’re letting people know we’re here. We’re not gonna shy away. We’re not gonna be in the shadows. We’re not gonna be scared,” one of the fathers says. The documentary will show the six fathers discussing their issues and fears for safety, especially with the rise of anti-trans sentiment in the US.
Fisher tweeted on her Instagram account, saying, “I am thrilled to share that my new film THE DADS will make its world premiere at South by Southwest this March!” and thanked “all the dads who had a hand in this important work.”
