Danish Queer Coming-of-Age Miniseries ‘One of the Boys’ to Stream Soon This Pride Month!

One Of The Boys

A queer, four-part miniseries titled ‘One of the Boys’ will be hitting our home screens at the start of Pride Month!

Directed by Teys Schucany, ‘One of the Boys’ is a Danish four-part series that transports viewers to Denmark’s countryside while exploring the complex entanglement of feelings around sexuality, masculinity, and queerness.

It is a story about Lau (played by Jonathan Meinert Pedersen), a socially awkward teenager who grew up in a rural town where hyper-masculinity is praised. He is sent to a “Man Camp”, a retreat for young boys where they are challenged and tested for strength and stamina. There, he meets a new kid, Aksel (played by Jacob Spang Olsen), a beach-blond boy with an artistic side who intrigues Lau. Eventually, the two develop feelings for each other, but they struggle to express it especially when they are in a “masculine” camp surrounded by peers who won’t hesitate to tease those who cannot prove their manliness.

Viaplay describes ‘One of the Boys’ as “a sensitive, funny, heartbreaking, and poetic glimpse of a small, hyper-masculine provincial town in Denmark as one boy feels pressure to fit in with other boys while struggling with his romantic feelings for a charming new boy.”

‘One of the Boys’ is one of the three short-form series of the Viaplay Original Talent Awards which supports Scandinavian creators. As one of the awardees, director Schucany was given access to Viaplay’s production resources, allowing him to give life to this story.

‘One of the Boys’ will premiere on June 8 and exclusively stream on Viaplay in the United States.
