A New And Queer Family Moves Into ‘Neighbours’ Reboot

The long-running Australian show ‘Neighbours’ is introducing a queer family when it returns this September!

The Varga-Murphy family joins the neighborhood in Ramsay Street, which includes two moms — Cara (played by Sara West) and Dr. Remi (played by Naomi Rukavina) — and their sons JJ (played by Riley Bryant) and Dex (played by Marley Williams).

The fall reboot will also see the return of queer couple Chloe and Elly.

“We, along with our screen sons, are very excited to be joining the new ‘Neighbours’ and to let you know that we will be on screen this September,” West and Rukavina said in a video announcement posted on the official accounts of ‘Neighbours’.

“Cara has a bold, impassioned love for her family and I love that her intentions have, so far, always been good. I hope having the Varga-Murphys on telly will help better reflect the beautiful LGBTQIA+ community that I’m proud to be a part of and I can’t wait to share the family with you,” West said in Variety.

Dr. Remi actress Rukavina added, “As a stalwart of Australian drama television, the show is on the front foot of showcasing diverse and real representations of Australian families, not in a tokenistic way.”

‘Neighbours’ almost ended its run — which has aired since 1985 — in 2022 when Channel 5 ended the contract with the show through a grand finale feature that included ‘Neighbours’ alumni Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie.

However, the series was taken by Amazon Freevee, and it will return starting September 2023.
